Thanks for the info Daza. I was just coming here to let everyone know about how I fixed the problem and saw your post. Good info, I might try that to see if I get better results.

I have already been using GraphEdit to look at my media files. With codecs being so problematic, the GraphEdit utility is required.

I saw that my Windows Media files were using a SageTV decoder. I don't use SageTV (I only installed it for testing), so I just uninstalled the program and made sure the codecs were unregistered and blown away. That helped.

Swapped the quartz.dll with an older version and it seemed to help a little bit (although not much).

Still had some problems with other codecs installed on my system (and it is very disturbing how many get installed by default with various programs, especially considering that all of them want to be the *only* one). I tried all kinds of different combinations and no joy (GraphEdit and DECCHECK saved alot of time, it could have been much worse if I had to modify merits or unregister/register for every combination).

I started reading more of the forums around here and kept seeing that Sub and others were frequently mentioning Cyberlink. WIth this in mind, I decided to install PowerDVD 7 and set those codecs as the preferred. It helps that those codecs are fully suppported by Windows Media Player 10.

JOY! The playback problems have been resolved to a point of near perfection (relative to my setup capabilities).

So, in a nutshell, getting rid of some nasty codecs, the quartz.dll modification, and installing the "right" codecs has resolved my issues. The most substantial increase in quality came from the PowerDVD codecs. Wow.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for their responses. Great community and programs Smile

The quartz.dll bug discussed in this thread causes jittery playback (usually after ff/rr operation). It's something to do with out of order deinterlacing and only affects the dx9c vmr9 renderer. Vmr7 and overlay renderers are unaffected by this issue.

I've experienced it on both nvidia and ati cards accross a variety of video decoders, nvidia, cyberlink, intervideo and dscaler5.

if you want to record to mpeg (i think this is what you're asking...) follow these instructions:

Get Hybrid DVB-T/Analog zipped driver from http://www.twinhan.com/download_driver&software.asp

Extract (not install) THMpgMux.ax in a preferred directory (eg. ...\devnz\gbpvr)

Click Start then Run program
Type: Regsvr32 "<directory where you extracted the muxer>\THMpgMux.ax" hit return

Now you have Cyberlink muxer registered and working.

I have a strange problem that I'm sure is related to decoding.

Using a PVR-350 card. I recorded a show using GBPVR and it played back just fine from "Recordings". But I wanted to cut out commercials and make the file smaller. So I used Nero 7 to edit out the commercials and then export the shortened file to my "Video Library" directory. This file plays fine from the desktop.

But, when I go into GBPVR and choose "Video Library" and then try to watch the file it gets weird. It plays back from the middle of the program (not the beginning) and there is no audio. It looks OK, just no sound and not from the proper start location.

Can anyone help me understand why I can't play the file back through GBPVR? I've tried playing with the playback options, but nothing seems to make any difference.

Thanks in advance.

Do you use the tv-out on the 350, or do you use the comp. monitor/tv-out on graphics card. Which program do you use to playback from your desktop. I guess that Nero did something to your file. I don't think Nero is wellknown for it's mpg-editing capabilities, perhaps just a setting in Nero:confused:

Nero smoked your MPEG stream information, and may have saved in its proprietary NeroShow format. Don't use it as an editor. Find a frame-accurate native MPEG editor that you like and use it instead.

I have pimped out VideoReDo on these forae before:

http://www.videoredo.com/

Well worth the registration fee IMO.

I have also had good luck with Womble MPEG2VCR:

http://www.womble.com/products/VCR.html

Both of these products are designed to re-encode MPEG frames at your cut points only, saving lots of time over non-native MPEG editors.

I use VideoRedo also. It is the best editor out there. Much nicer interface than Womble MPEG2VCR.

I can copy that quartz.dll over, but it keeps reverting back to the original. What's up with that?
