I've never really been a fan of open source myself, but even if I was, GB-PVR could never become open source in the future because of the various NDAs I've signed to get access to manufacturer SDKs and technical specifications etc.

Was this directed more at faltkaese? I wasn't necessarily advocating you open up, just responding to his faltkaese's comments.

This is getting off-topic, but I do keep an eye on Myth and other solutions, because I feel that DRM and Trusted Computing and all that other crap will eventually try to obsolete HTPCs (unless you pay to get a closed Dell+Microsoft one). I think open-source apps (perhaps with questionable legality) and legacy hardware might be our only hope for the freedom we have now to watch what we want when we want. I don't have enough knowledge to say how the continued evolution of the Windows components GB-PVR is built upon will affect apps such as GB-PVR or Sage. Lets hope they all continue to work - open, free, or otherwise. Until then, GB-PVR rocks.

Yeah, I know. My comment was sort of directed at him aswell (not you), but also for anyone else that was wondering.

I agree completely and I am also deeply concerned; not just me being able to do what I can now, but concepts of public domain, availability of information, access to libraries.... all under threat. I don't necessarily think the future will be 1984 - it's looking increasingly like Fahrenheit 451.

Cool - not that it would have hurt my feelings to open it Wink, but I understand about the NDAs and also the point of the comment.

Well, I'm still a little afraid of 1984, but you're right. Extended copyrights, DMCA, etc. I think the content producers would be happy to force us all to buy one copy for each place we want to use it - one for the TV, one for the iPod, etc. Want a HD version? More $$$. Lose your hard drive? More $$$. Want to keep it more than a week? $$$. Ugh - tip o' the iceberg.

Obligatory link for all you paranoids, and I'll end my rant:

Hijacking the thread, but I agree with you apart from one thing: we won't buy 'a copy' as you and I know it, we will 'licence an experience'.

Pay-per-view-per-play-per-listen-per-read.

I also saw the odd pink bars when watching something via MVP the other night and simply assumed it was subs first attempt at mind control via subliminal messages Big Grin
