Have you tried setting the channel changer to USB-UIRT in the config utility? (Capture sources tab, highlight your recording source, click edit then change channel chander drop down to USB-UIRT plugin, click settings and then follow the prompts to teach GBPVR the number keys for your remote) Now it should change the channels for you!

I think he wants to change channels on the STB with usb-uirt, but without using gbpvr.

Aha, you are right... re-read the post. You can do it with HIP/Girder, but I'm not sure of any other way.
