Possibly a problem with the mpeg decoder? - I use the Intervideo NonCSS ones (atm)

Glad to hear I'm not the only one seeing this. I've been experiencing this phenomenon too and the logs don't show anything about the show that i was playing back being abruptly ending.

Actually I don't find that if I skip too fast...it's just if i press skip and it doesn't skip right away, and I press skip again right away, it would kind of lock up and then go back to the recording screen. If I were to play the file again, the resume prompt would appear and i would return to where i basically left off.

I didn't know how to describe this at first and thought it was because my computer was just too slow. I even tried raising the priority of IR.exe on my hauppauge remote to above normal to see if this would help, but it didn't.

I'm using Intervideo NonCSS decoder as well...but i've always used this decoder and this abrupt return to the recordings screen really only started during 97.13 and now 98.08.

I'd agree with Sub here - generally total hardware locks like this are BAD driver issues or hardware related (Bad ram - Overheating - Dodgy Cap's) - But as yours is so specific it certainly fall into the driver problem somewhere but it could be hard to pin down but the remote would be a good place to start. One thing I'd check is CPU usage with USB - I had a problem where simply moving the cursor around with my USB mouse used massive CPU - With task manager open showing the "system" process I could get 90% cpu utilisation by simply moving my mouse in small circles. It was a problem in the Windows XP usb stack somewhere that was resolved with a patch. I can't recall if it was pre-SP2 or not and buggered if I can find it now - But check if your CPU usage spikes with USB data - Also as others suggested I'd try skipping lots with the keyboard and see if it faults.

These problems are particularly annoying when everything else is working!

I had a problem like this with my USB capture card completely freezing my PC a couple of times a month while recording. I watch thru the MVP so I dont use live tv. I found a post on the Hauppauge forum that claimed there was a problem with VIA chip USB drivers and the USB capture card. MY solution was to get a PCI based USB card and plug the capture card into this and not the builtin USB. A year later and not a single freeze! So check your PC for VIA USB drivers.
