rscheller Wrote:It seems to transcode much better than ffmpeg but when 'Use ffdshow post processing if installed' is selected in config / playback, it causes my live TV feed on the PC to have a blank screen and no sound and it seems to mess with the stability of GBPVR when I've attempted to watch live TV.

In previous versions there were 2 options for ffdshow. One for transcoding and one for postprocessing. But now I can only find the postprocessing one.
When you select postprocessing does it transcode for the mvp then?

Perhaps ffdshow is selected now under GBPVR config Playback / Software MPEG-2 playback? I do remember seeing ffdshow in the list for Video and Audio Decoders available when I had ffdshow installed. I didn't try selecting ffdshow from there as I've had good success using the default for those selections which in my case (according to my decoder checkup utility) uses the Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder on my computer.

I've cautiously tried various options but if something doesn't work I straight-line back to what did work last. I can honestly say I'm confused about how GBPVR should be setup to get the proper decoders / transcoders etc. working when doing everything GBPVR can do.

FYI, I just reinstalled ffdshow to check and it only shows up under the Audio Decoder not Video Decoder as I'd previously implied.

Anyhow, I selected ffdshow as the Audio Decoder and still had black screen on my PC when trying to watch live TV and GBPVR went unstable again. I again uninstalled ffdshow.

As good as this GBPVR is, it can be a headache to get fine tuned. Would ZProcess work better for me? I read about it and it just sounds like another can-of-worms to work through to get set up.

ZProcess can be a can of worms, yes. ZProcess does not use ffdshow, and neither does GB-PVR when it transcodes on the fly for MVP...

Currently ZProcess only uses the version of ffmpeg shipped with GB-PVR. I'm looking at making some changes to that though. Possiblt a newer version of ffmpeg, or using MEncoder instead.

Although the defaults for transcoding profiles in ZProcess are based on the defaults found within the config.xml of GB-PVR, I think that ZProcess works a little better because it also calculates the aspect ratio correctly, on the fly...

You really shouldn't have too much trouble installing ZProcess and using the defaults to start with.

Doesn't GBPVR 98.13 use ffmpeg to transcode to the MVP on the fly?

Because that's where my original transcode to the MVP problems began. When I used the GBPVR included version of ffmpeg, ffmpeg would crash (even using command line) ... see my post here... when trying to transcode wmv and avi files to the MVP, which lead me to try a different version of ffmpeg which didn't crash when transcoding either type file. In fact it worked flawlessly for the wmv files on the MVP but not for any of the avi files. However the same avi files that failed to transcode on the fly to the MVP transcoded to MVP playable files using ffmpeg command line conversions.

That's when I tried ffdshow which transcoded wmv and avi files to the MVP perfectly on the fly however ffdshow caused live TV to not work on my GBPVR PC as well as GBPVR instability which sent me back to (the new version) ffmpeg with only the one issue of not transcoding avi files on the fly to the MVP.

Yes. GB-PVR uses ffmpeg. Not ffdshow when transcoding on the fly to MVP...

I have read your posts...

If you're able to transcode wmv and avi manually, but not on the fly, then it's not so much an issue with the version of ffmpeg, but other parameters, like speed of system, or MVP Transcode preplay delay...

The system needs the power and time to transcode enough of the file so that GBPBR won't give up

GBPVR is very impatient. When it requests a file, if it's not there, it gives up. If the transcoder doen't create the file fast enough for it's hungry appetite, it gives up...

I believe something else is going on. From what I understand, FFDshow is not involved when you transcode on the fly for the MVP

My system specs are in my sig and that's not likely the problem. I've also tried various transcode delays up to 12 seconds and still, on the fly transcode won't always work on the MVP.

Another thing you might try is just lowering the bitrate a little. My system seems to have enough beef to transcode on the fly at the default 2400 outside of GB-PVR, but when I leave it set that way it just doesn't work, and increasing the pre-delay doesn't help like you might think it would either. However, someone else suggested changing the default bitrate of 2400 down to 2000 and I've had no trouble since.

@ Rscheller:

I still don't understand how you let ffdshow transcode on the fly for the mvp.
