I personally like VideoReDo for editing .ts. It's one of the few download softwares that I've been willing to put money on ($50).
At 25 cents a disk and the ability to play from disk (or copy back to a hard drive), I decided not to convert. I'll just archive the transport streams and wait for HD recording drives, media, and software (Blu-Ray or HD-DVD or the Chinese format) to become available at a reasonable price. This will require hardware and software that is available from multiple manufacturers and not just one or two companies.
All of my early archiving was done on CD-Rs at 720x480 with 44Khz audio and VBR encoding (45 min per disk). Technically an XSVCD format (at DVD resolution). Recent conversion to DVD went pretty smooth. I hope to repeat the method for HDTV.
