If so, does temporarily running at a lower resolution help?

OK, I changed the resolution output by the display card to 1280 x 720 and the stuttering or skipped frames still appears.

I'd try looking in the TV menu for something like 'auto scale' then try running GBPVR at a lower resolution to see if that helps.

Sorry to say my TV does not have that adjustment - it's a 55" rear projection Mitsubishi. Doesn't really matter though because running at a lower resolution does not resolve the problem.

Hmmm, your system should be up to the task.
have you tried differrent decoder combinations. I know my system didn't work very well with the purevideo decoder.

I just tried recording an HDTV show to see if it played back the same as live TV. Interesting - in GBPVR it plays back with stutter. With Windows Media Player, it plays OK. I assume this is one of two things:

1) Windows Media Player is possibly using overlay mode

2) If not, it points to a decoder setting / problem.

Does anyone know if WMP uses overlay mode? If I change the GBPVR settings to use all 3 "System Defaults", shouldn't this use the same decodes as WMP? How can I tell which decodes that WMP is using?

Re: WMP, go to Tools ~ Options ~ Performance ~ Video Acceleration ~ Advanced. Either Overlay mode or High Quality mode will be selected. HQ means VMR mode.

A few things to check:
* Did you try full-screen exclusive mode? It provides much better performance in my case.
* shared interrupts - make sure the video card's IRQ isn't the same the sound card. HD with AC3 sounds will exercise both.
* PCI latency - enabled way too high by NVidia and ATI drivers for AGP cards, sometimes causing systems to stutter in video and/or sound. See this: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=951
* In GBPVR's Config ~ Playback ~ Video Decoder Settings, what Decoder Format are you showing? DirectX VA mode A or C? And have you tried turning off Deinterlacing?

Hi WTG

I tried full screen exclusive and it is better than VMR9, but still not watchable.

Sorry but some of this stuff is over my head. How do I check to see if there are any shared IRQ's?

I downloaded the PCI Latency. The latency is set at 32. What value do you recommencd?

The DirectX VA mode is set to A. Can you tell me where to turn off deinterlacing - I will also give that a try.

Thanks for your help.

Control Panel ~ System ~ Hardware ~ Device Manager. From the view menu, select Resources By Type, and expand the Interrupt Requests (IRQ) selection. There's an interrupt number assigned to many of your hardware devices, and while sharing is allowed, if two or three high bandwidth items share the same one, the system will often suffer. You want and hope your system will avoid the video card and sound card sharing, and I had one system that had the network card, video card and sound card all sharing the same one.

If you do see sharing, fixing it varies by BIOS so I can't offer a step-by-step. Extremely low-end machines often don't even provide the option, but many BIOS will have a section for reserving or assigning IRQ for devices. Also, sometimes moving PCI cards between slots on the motherboard will result in a different IRQ assignment, so it's a simple matter of moving the sound card. I haven't looked, but I'm betting there are much better write-ups somewhere on the web about assigning or reserving IRQs.

tjb Wrote:I downloaded the PCI Latency. The latency is set at 32. What value do you recommencd?

Surprisingly low actually. NVidia driver installs usually sets it to 248 for the card which is way too high and starves the other system resources, often making everything run bad once the video card gets taxed. Since it is low you can try bumping it up to 64 to see if that gives the video card a more time to do it's thing.

tjb Wrote:The DirectX VA mode is set to A. Can you tell me where to turn off deinterlacing - I will also give that a try.

As I understand it, Mode A is the lowest level of acceleration. You'd like to see mode C here. I couldn't get my 6200 out of A mode, HD wasn't acceptable and I gave up on it eventually. The 6600 is supposed to be more capable.

Just to the left of the mode display you should have a deinterlacing checkbox. Turning it off should improve performance.

I don't think I've provided any yet Smile , but hopefully you'll get it figured out.

Something I didn't see in the previous posts, which tuner are you using? Also, is the stuttering only with live tv and its recordings? Or with all video including dvds?

I had similar issues with live tv before, but it was due to a lousy tuner card. When I upgraded to a pvr150 it cleared. Just a thought.

Carlito,
Which decoder did you find that works the best for you and how can I get it installed (does it come with an app or can you download it)? The only one I have installed right now is PureVideo, but I would like to try another to se if it makes any difference.
