I was just explaining the logic is uses to determine which capture source it uses.

If you're trying to understand why static is being recorded, then this is because there is no cable channel available at the frequency you're trying to record. There could be lots of reasons for this. The simplest may be that your cable isnt connected to the HVR1600 or maybe not the correct connector. Alternatively, you're connected via a set top box, and the channel 9 its trying to record on is not the channel number the box outputs on (its usually CH2 or CH3). Alternatively channel 9 might not be a valid channel number for your analog broadcasts.

I'm not sure if the Tuning Assistant is compatible with the HVR1600, but try running it. If it works, it should show you what analog channels the HVR1600 is receiving.

BTW, if you want to record via ATSC digital not analog, then delete your analog capture source.

I want to record off both though.
The tuning assistant finds channels for analog cable. I don't see an option for HVR-1600 ATSC though.

Thats fine. You have to use the rules I gave above to decide which order you want the capture sources listed. ie, favour the analog side for recording, or favour the ATSC side for recordings. Choice is yours.

Cool. Now make sure only those analog channels shown in the Tuning Assistant are enabled in your analog capture source, and make sure the channel numbers match those shown in the Tuning Assistant. If they match, then you wont get any static when you record with the analog side of this device.

The Tuning Assistant is relevent to digital channels. Instead you just do the 'Map digital channels to epg channels' step in the capture source settings.
