Lindsay Wrote:Hi, Erik. Speed is good, especially for the bigger HD files to come. But I must be a cynic, too, as surely there must be a trade off?

I must have a good comskip.ini for NZ TV1 as my commonly recorded shows are cutting very accurately. Just watched an hour show and every ad was hit perfectly. Thanks, again, for your great program.

hey lindsay - can i get a copy of your ini files you are using - mine isnt too bad but i get some programs that are just funky !!Rolleyes

Yes, there is interest. Any further enhancements to optimize disk IO would be welcomed too.

I'm not sure how you are doing it, but I'm guessing double speed means skipping frames. To me that sounds OK. I don't mind a bit of the commerical either side of the break. In fact if you changed the scan to poll frames every ten or 15 frames, I'm guessing that would be even faster. Certainly less accurate, but as I said, not an issue for me....

OK, here is the tradeoff.
I can easily skip some frames of a regular HD broadcast , all HD broadcasts I received till today will allow this speed up.
However there is another catch, and that also holds for the request for h.264 support. I really enjoyed implementing all the intelligence in Comskip to defeat many weird broadcasting schemes. Its like solving a puzzle. Every new .csv file I received was like a new puzzle. Not all could be solved but most people requesting support did receive a solution. But the challenge in solving the .csv puzzles is decreasing (many people do not read the documentation) and I only have SD broadcast and MPEG2 PS recording. So the work of implementing all kind of weird Smile decoders and speeding up Comskip is irrelevant for me.
The low level of donations (one every two months in average) indicates there are not that many really happy Comskip users, so why bother.
Any suggestion how to increase my motivation?

I know what you mean. I'm very sure that you have logged more hours than I developing your app, and certainly it's more popular. I get the feeling that my apps are worth more to its users than to myself. And that's when I added the Donate button to my apps.

I know the general feeling that I felt when I first joined is that it's free software, and a majority of the 3rd party developers are contributing out of a hobby spirit. (Certainly GB-PVR itself and many contributions are more accurately called 'DonateWare' than 'freeware'.)

I've never been able to contribute financially to GB-PVR or comskip, but I have tried to contribute with writing for the wiki and writing my own tools.

But I know that it might be a stronger show of appreciation to receive some deniro for your efforts.

I do not use Comskip, but I want to say I do like your approach to give a bonus for those who donate.

I doubt the lack of donations is related to the number of happy users. It's probably many just don't take the time or realize how few actually do. I know that you only getting one or two donations a month comes as a shock to me, and makes me feel guilty that I haven't donated more than once.

It seems to me the biggest problem is making sure people understand the need - maybe a little pop-up in your zip file or via an install app could make it more obvious to people that help would be appreciated.

Also, it wouldn't be unreasonable to start requiring registration for some features to be accessible. Whether it's your performance optimized HD version or something else, I'm sure there's some kind of gentle prod you could give people to encourage them to donate. Heck, if it had a 60 minute unregistered processing limit you'd probably be rolling in cash. Smile

Honestly if comskip disappeared tomorrow I'm sure there'd be a huge collective cry of despair around the world. You just need to make it a bit more known that this has become enough like work that you need a bit more incentive to continue.

Here I'd have to agree with wtg.
