Yeah, Hauppauge's answer left much to be desired. It also took them 10 days to respond. I wouldn't think that it would be that hard to get the 150 to capture captions if the 250 and 350 drivers already do it. Steal/borrow/abstract the code - whatever.

[b Wrote:Quote[/b] ]The drivers have to take the caption data from line 21 of the broadcast signal and store it in the MPEG file's GOP user areas. So if the drivers don't support this... no captions.

That's what I figured. bitter_old_man, are you using captions through a video card? They didn't really answer my MVP question but I'm still happy with my 150/MVP combination. The commercial skip works great. I don't require captions but they are nice. I still use the VCR sometimes for that. My cable company's video on demand doesn't have captions either.

joche, captions are basically the text of the show encoded in the stream (plus descriptions of sounds, etc.) Ostensibly they are for the hearing impaired, but I use them even though I can hear. You can get every word even if it is quiet or mumbled (and sometimes stuff you can't really hear), the tv can be quieter, which is good with small kids, and sometimes you learn some things, like the names of songs you recognize but don't know.

Aha, I see. We have a lot of that in sweden (we never dub foreign films).

But in my country they simply mix the text ontop of image before they air it. However we also can get text via text TV and now with the digital TV the textx comes in it's own stream.

I have allways thought it's called sub texts.

I've always called the translation on foreign films subtitles, which is different than captions because it's just the dialog and it assumes you an still hear the sound - it's for language translation and not hearing impairment. Captions mixed on the video are open captions; those embedded in the stream that you need to turn on are closed.

I believe subtext and other phrases are just regional differences - basically the same thing.
