I'm not really sure if there is. And, it appears to change. Example....last week I recorded a Nat. Geo show for my wife (via cablecard --not ceton yet) and was able to convert to mpg to watch on the PCH. This was not an HD show but in the digital side of Cox Cable. This week I recorded the new show but this time I can't do a thing with it without getting the dreaded message that I can't copy it. Can't convert or do anything with it but play it on WMC. I do get a message when playing it on another networked system in WMC but if I wait a few seconds, it does play after spitting out the message that it can't.
I know this doesn't answer your question but I'm going to play with using the 411 in WMC to see what I can find. Pressing info-411 with the remote while in WMC will give a few pages of info on the signal so maybe I can find out if it tells me something or not.
If you don't hear back, bump this so I don't forget.

The flag is set on a per-program basis. I've actually seen the flag set on broadcast content that was sent in Clear QAM (Heroes episodes). With Motorola cable boxes, there is a diagnostic page that you can check but I don't know how to check on FIOS.

For my cableco using SA Sara software using firewire it isn't even per programs, sometimes I can watch Letterman sometimes not. It's also by output, but I can't even tell. I don't even know if the STB debug screen for a good CF channel would have policies that apply to an external card.

According to that screen, that channel is "Copy Freely" so you would have no problem recording that one at the time. By "per-program", I actually meant "per-episode", not "per-show". Unfortunately, there is no way to tell what it's going to be until air time.

I just check Media Center with the 411 info keys and it shows me nothing as far as I can tell regarding copy freely. I still don't know how much the cable company is involved vs. the networks actually.

So basically the copy once/freely can change at any time without reason. If labeled copy once, the program can only be recorded and played by Win 7 MediaCenter. If labeled copy freely, it can be recorded by NPVR by way of the MCE bridge (that Whurlston plans to write) or if by some miracle CableLabs decides to allow non Win 7 programs to work with copy freely. Is my understanding correct?

This is a shot of my Moto diagnostic screen for a particular channel. Tried looking up the codes on AVS forums but they seem more worried about what codes have the ability to record via firewire. Anyone know how to read the codes to see if it is copy freely/once?

Everything that you schedule to record will, encrypted or not. You schedule the recording in NPVR and the bridge tuner will request Media Center to record that program. If the recording is not encrypted, you will be able to play it back in NPVR. Otherwise, you will need to use Media Center to watch it.

All flags are 0x00 so that would result in an unencrypted recording. I think the CCI and DRM flags are the only ones in question but I can't be certain until I actually have an OCUR to test.

I have a related question. If you record a record once program (encrypted) with Windows Media Center, can you view it on another computer running Windows Media Center or on a XBOX 360?

You can view it with the XBox 360 but not with another Media Center PC.
