Regarding the DirectX install/update. The web installer has failed about half the time for me, with the assertion that a later version is installed. NPVR didn't agree. Wink

The workaround is to download the entire 40MB or so DirectX package with all the updates, and then install. Has worked OK for me then. I think you can delete the download after the update, but haven't tried this myself. I think you can get to the whole package download from the web page referenced in the sticky/community announcement. HTH

I solved my high processor problem! Google finds lots of people unable to install DX9 on Vista/W7 from the Web Installer because it finds a later version already installed. Microsoft suggest several ways to get the DX9 installer to work but none worked for me. I installed the June 2010 DirectX Redist which is a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut but NPVR now has working DirectX.

The original DirectX 9c download seems to have disappeared leaving the Web Installer or the June 2010 Redistributable at 95MB. The web installer lists Vista and W7 so it should work but I wonder if recent updates have stopped it working. It may be worth trying the 9c web installer immediately after installing Windows and before running Windows Update.

I've successfully used the June 2010 redistributable on two Win 7 machines. The download file name is: directx_Jun2010_redist.exe and it's 100MB. This would have been back in February, so something may have changed since then.

Since installing NPVR over a year ago I have always had fairly high cpu usage / temps. I originally installed the direct x update and have used the web installer several times since + SAF6 checks this as well. - There has never been any hints that things are a-miss,( direct x is up to date or a newer version is installed) no messages or logging in NPVR.

Just for the hell of it I downloaded the full redist from http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/det...px?id=8109 dated 18th April 2011

This installer installed a shed load of files which seem to have improved several problems I have been having with NPVR - reduced CPU usage - better skipping (not quite perfect but much better) - less audio stutter on HE-AAC (again not quite perfect) - No crashes scrolling through video menus and a much better picture Q as well Smile

It is 95 mb to download but perhaps ought to be a recommendation - I didn't realize I had a direct x problem until this fixed them!
It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives  Huh

Although the full DirectX redistributable cured my problem on my Vista NPVR server it doesn’t cure my client problem where Direct X wont work with the built in Intel graphics so have had to use an ATI graphics card which is actually slower. This happens with both XP and Vista so I think its one of those graphics cards that just wont work with DirectX and NPVR.

I have exactly the same problem with an older ATI card and npvr on W7x86.

Yeah I agree Jcjefferies I have found the same intel graphics are missing something in their drivers as the cards should work looking at the specs of them .
Same result install ati/nvidia card directx problem goes away switch back to intel card dont change anything else and directx problem is back

Some of you with older card may find that large texture support for your card are the problem, and setting the 'UI Resolution' to some low value may make it work.
