There has only been one tiny change in buffer size in 2.2.6, but it shouldnt account for any performance difference, and I wasnt seeing any difference here. The attached patch undoes that buffer size change and puts it back to how it was in 2.1. Let me know if you think it fixes it.

I put a GeForce 280 in the client and swapped out the 100mb switch for a gigabit switch. At that point the performace was acceptable, though not as great as I'd expect (Still occasionally 5 to 15 second delays when skipping around through the file).

Anything less than a gigabit connection and performance on the client becomes poor again. There is nothing going on through the network, though, and CPU usage on both the client and server PCs are normal. Using ffdshow or not using ffdshow has no effect, and playing a file locally on the client (a file that was recorded on the server) is fine.

Any ideas where to go from here?

your hardware specs look fine, and your network looks fine.
My P3 and cheepy GFX card takes 5-10 seconds to start streaming, but once it's started the picture is fine and video and audio stays in sync.
It's mostly decoders and/or renderer that cause sync issues in my experience. I can't tell you exactly what I'm using as I'm away from home, but from memory I think Gabest audio and video decoders and VMR9 are working well for me but to be honest it's changed with every setup so just copying another system is unlikely to get the best results.
I normally download the CCCP codec pack every time I do a clean install, and then just methodically co through every three way mix of audio decoder, video decoder and renderer until you get something you like!

Well I now think the problem was hardware related. I work for a company that sells Thin Clients and I have a number of them here in my home office. I took one of the higher end ones with a 1.7ghz Atom processor. I put the GE280 video card in one and installed Windows Thin PC (basically Windows 7 Embedded), ffdshow, and nPVR on it gave that a try.

The internal wireless connected at 300mb and everything loaded well. Watching recordings from the server and skipping around in them is responsive enough considering the video is being streamed and I no longer see the long hangs that I was seeing previously. So either the dual core PC i was using as a client has some weirdness going on or I just got lucky and hit a good configuration. Either way it appears to be working for a moment, and using the thin client as an nPVR client is nice because it's relatively small and low power.

Thanks for all the help, everyone. Great stuff! Smile

is this change back to 2.1.x buffer settings being kept? I see two people have downloaded it but no one has reported anything about the specific change.

I'll leave it with that old 2.1.x buffer setting. I dont think the change made any significant difference.

ok, I've been updating the patch list and pondering a 'cumulative' patch zip, just wanted to be sure I don't include anything you have since undone

Often those lags can be a result if the network interface card is using features like green ethernet, especially on adapters from realtek and nvidia. It's worth a try to disable all "energyefficient" features on server and client and test again. I can watch here SD material without any problem via 54 Mb wlan (wpa2 personal/aes).
You like nPVR? Then please help pay the bills, and keep the project alive!

My happy NextPVR family
