hd on xp using evr will always cause high cpu usage as you wont get any hardware acceleration from the video card cpu has to do all the work

While fiddling with decoders, I discovered that the pure video decoder has setting and it was set on overlay. So I set it to vmr9 and will test it out later today.

dunno what screen you have but try different resolutions (once your text looks crisp on the desk top normally if lcd then normally thats the best)
or try and match to what ever media you are playing back
check the refresh rate also try multiples of 30hz(60hz is the norm) since you are in america
or if playing pal material try multiples of 50hz
turn off all extra crap in video card setting except turn force wait for vertical sync(helps stop tearing)
cyberlink is another decoder worth trying

Have you tried different video card drivers. Sometimes you even have to go back to older ones to get the performance you want.

I wasn't able to get satisfactory performance from the Nvidia video decoder after going to HD. Under XP, I had the best success with the MPC Home Cinema decoder. With this decoder I think I was able to get reasonable performance with VMR9. If you only will use NPVR (no custom/external tasks), then VMR FSE may be a solution. There were some posts on this forum back in 2006 about how to get the best setup for the Nvidia decoder. Look for posts by user csy.

Regarding video card drivers, I doubt Nvidia has been paying much attention to XP users for the last few years. Thus, their XP drivers for newer cards may not be very good, especially for HD video.

I think your best approach at this point is to thoroughly clean out all your existing decoders and try Hoborg's SAF package. He seems to get good results in Europe with it.

Even with the above, you will probably still struggle with XP, based on my experience. Win7 with the EVR renderer is the way to go for video. If you have more than one box, the family pack with 3 licenses for $120 or so is a relative bargain. The only decoder you will need with 7 is an AC3 audio decoder, AC3 Filter or LAV.

all good advice, except that the family pack upgrade isn't available any longer and hasn't been for some time... though you may be able to find it on ebay or through other sellers on amazon or buy.com. I'd worry about the validity of the license keys though when going through such sources.

Glad I got the family pack a year or so ago. Too bad. I agree with the concern about alternative channels, so to speak.

Is there anyone on the forum here from the US that is still on XP? And, is getting good HD performance? If so, what is your setup?

I too have choppy playback. When I watch Live Tv it is fine so I assume the recording should be fine as well. No issues with CPU as is under 10% most times. Using Windows 7. I have tried other players and all have same results very very bad playback of ts files created by NPVR. I have tried various decoders for mpeg2 video in NPVR and still no good results. Any ideas?

Are these digital recordings? If so, then these recordings are just a dump of the broadcast stream, with no tweaking by NextPVR, so no reason they wouldn't play in other players unless you've either got decoder issus or possibly audio driver issues etc.
