How? nPVR only support external .srt if i am not wrong.
Another way is to use VSFilter for subtitles, but this will kill DXVA Smile

Npvr supports dvb-subtitles, teletext subtitles and .srt subtitles. Playing .mkv files with DirectShow gives me embedded subtitles without interfering with HW acceleration. I'm not sure if VSFilter is in use or not, but I definitly have HW acceleration since cpu consumption is 8-10 % playing 1080p .mkv's.

It will be good if you check the graph by Graphstudio and share your graph.
Acording the wiki, npvr support only external subs in srt format (lets left DVB and teletext subs aside...)

But .mkv's (and avi, mp4 etc) are not played by npvr, it simply leaves it to DirectShow to play them.

And?
You can just drag and drop your MKV to Graphstudio to check the graph what decoder are in use and from where the subs come from.

Solved:
1) Checked NPVR logs to see what graph was being built to identify not - working video filter (was using the Microsoft one)
2) Googled for this Direct Show preference tweeker http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=146910
3) Changed video filter for H264 to ffdhow.
4) Works fine now Smile

Thanks all the for the pointers.
