Depends on your Video Card But I have found that PDVD12 (Unlocked SAF pm Hoborg for instructions) is by far the best decoder for both HD & SD Freeview - used with Adaptive de-interlacing on a AMD HD5670, even SD looks like HD on a 50" plasma. I also seem to remember that the LAV Video decoder doesn't work well with NPVR I believe Arcsoft or Cyberlink are recommended by Sub.

Also if you use FFDshow for post processing you could set it to output 5.1, enable the prologic decoder and set pass through for AC3 & DTS which should give you 5.1 for all channels - HD AAC & SD mpeg2 that is what I used to do before AAC came along and I used FFDshow for all my audio decoding.
It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives  Huh

Okay I have figured out how to use ffdshow, i need to set my renderer to directshow for it to work without jittering. However still haven't figured out how to get it to latch on to the 5.1 output from lav filters.

I find it annoying that I can't change the config of lav in NPVR, why is this the case when I can change it in MPC?. This means I can't enjoy Yadif deinterlacing in the video decoder, or change the settings of the audio decoder during playback. - It always just seems to use the default settings (although i do not know because i cannot access it). Even setting it up beforehand it still does not use yadif.

Is there any reason why I can't change lav properties or view them during playback in npvr?

I can get 5.1 for all channels fine using the hardware mixing of my soundcard. But I don't want to upmix stereo sources to 5.1. I want them to stay stereo and only have 5.1 HE-ACC encoded in to ac3.

Is this not possible with automation?

Oops I am wrong. Look at the attached screenshot.

Shows LAV receiving 5 channels but only outputting 2. So I'm not receiving true 5.1 even using hardware decoding.

On another note, why on earth is lav reading the stream as 5.1 44.1khz audio???

Not sure what you mean. It says 2 channel, 48,000 hz in the bottom of the window does it not?

Yes, but if you look above, it says 5 channels 4400.

Theres just something incorrect about the way its decoding the audio..not sure where i can go from hereSad

I have spoken to the developer of LAV, nevcairiel.

He mentions he thinks the problem is the NPVR isn't showing the current decoder instance, but instead a new one.

Is there a way to get this fixed for those using LAV?

It's not a bug - that's how I intended it to work. Most decoders just store their settings in the registry, and you can indepently edit the settings on a new instance of the decoder, and those settings will be used next time a graph is built.

I can try to add something in a future build to allow users to view filter properties of the active filters in a graph. It sounds like LAV is going to add what you want in the next release with tray icons.

I'm not sure about using other filters but that does sound useful. just with lav alone you would be able to see output channel's in audio and be able to look at pin info and change settings on the fly. very useful when trying to determine if audio is being decoded correctly and with video for example, it would be easier to compare different hardware acceleration or software deinterlacing settings.

also I thought you might like to know, for some reason you can't connect to npvrs graph unless you have saf installed. not sure why that is, but without it, you can't connect.

Thats normal too. The app doesn't enable this by default, since it can lead to memory leaks with some combinations of decoders.
