So here is my solution... Stop the NPVR services. Then go into services via computer management and change the Startup type for NPVR Recording Service from automatic to manual. Changing to manual will prevent the service from restarting on reboot or power up. Also in NPVR settings\Misc2, deselect Auto Update EPG. Although not directly related, my guess is that the client doesn't need this - EPG updating etc. is handled by the server machine. I figure this will prevent the client machine from getting woke up in the middle of the night for this unnecessary reason. Note: none of this appears to have much impact on the NPVR client. It still plays live TV and invokes recordings etc. Don't know what it might do with scheduling recordings though.

So if I'm wrong about the above... Somebody let me know.

You beat me to it. You must have posted while I was typing my reply.

Is this in the wiki documentation and I just missed it? If not, it should be.

Someone give me the tip to disable the service completely instead of setting it to manual. That way it won't restart on a new version.

Yep, always disable a windows service if you never want it to start.

The way it works when a service is set to "manual" comes down to dependencies - effectively there's a chain. Any service which depends on another service will attempt to start the other service it depends on even if it's set to a "manual" start. In this case "manual" doesn't mean a user starting the service explicitly other than a situation where the user is allowing a service down the dependency chain to start automatically (or, in fact, does manually start a service which has dependencies set for manual startup).

Technically though, setting a service startup to "disbled" won't necessarily prevent a new installer setting it back to "manual" or "automatic" - it's just a registry setting after all. Wink

Cheers,
Brian

I'm curious to know if your client PC wakes up the server just by launching the client. I have to use a Wake On Lan tool to start my server first or else the client takes a very long time to launch and then complains about the database not being available (because the server where the database resides is sleeping). Yet the server still doesn't awaken. Sad
