I am hoping that some of your problems are related to using the Back key in Kodi and possibly today's update will help. You may have better experience with a better client like an RPi.

I wish sub had never allowed Back as Stop in GBPVR it has caused me issues for a decade.

Thanks Martin. I'll check with the boss, but I've trained myself to use STOP and not the BACK button to stop playback in knewc. We do use the BACK button a lot in navigating around the client, not sure if that is also an issue or if there is even an alternative on some of the screens. The issue above happens sometimes when skipping, other times when no remote buttons have been pressed recently.

I'll look for the update, get that installed and keep tabs on this issue.

Thanks,
-Brad

The back key should not be an issue outside NextPVR. I can't imagine a scenario where the server would send a GUI screen during video without a key press. If the server didn't know you were watching video you can get a clock change or a screen saver screen but that wouldn't be long into a video.

We don't have any other add-ons setup on the local client Kodi, so knewc is pretty much all we use and the BACK button gets used plenty in navigating the menus. We have watched some VIDEO_TS format movies from Kodi because I haven't figured out how to get those to play from the Video library in NextPVR/knewc.

My wife says she has been trying to remember to use the STOP button to end playback, but cannot guarantee for certain that she hasn't fallen into the old habit of trying BACK button first.

For the last year I have considered NextPVR.exe was at the end of the road and hoped more people would simply move to Kodi or sub's new client. Based on a few recent posts it sounds like sub may be reconsidering improving NextPVR.exe that is why I decided to have a look at the Back key. Many new users will never touch knewc or NextPVR.exe

If sub improves the Windows client I hope there is time for hime to look into UI client issues too. I can't do everything from the client side.

My goal earlier this year was a new cross-platform client, but after spending a lot of time investigating options I've found the technologies aren't quite there yet. All the options have annoying crap you have to work around. I've decided to hold off on that new client for now, because there is more promising technology options coming in the near future. For now I will be doing some enhancements to nextpvr.exe and UI client so that it's fit for purpose for the short to medium term future.

Another thing we figured out on this issue (video playback stops but audio continues), it seems to be somewhat repeatable when someone else is using another knewc client. I had it happen watching football on one of my ODroids today right after my wife turned on the TV in the other room and started using the local client on the server with the remote control, but before she actually tried to watch anything. She said she's has had this happen to her with the RPi4 running knewc in our bedroom when she had gone to bed earlier than me and I still have a client in use elsewhere.

I don't recall if I mentioned that a new resume point is not saved, even though we need to press the STOP button to stop the audio and restart playback. So for me today I was 2.5 hours into a game, I had to jump around to find the location in the playback that the video had stopped.

I have also anecdotally noticed that there are sometimes "issues" when multiple knewc clients are accessing the server at the same time. Normally we just have the main RPi on the living room TV being used for watching things. But, occasionally I use the RPi in my bedroom to watch something at night. Often the next morning when I go back to the main TV, rather than still showing the knewc recordings menu where it had been left, it is showing the Kodi menu indicating that knewc had died/exited. I've just noticed this recently, so I'm not sure if this is something new or not. I'm also not sure if it is related to the timeouts that I see. Because it's sporadic and a rare occurrence, I haven't really tried troubleshooting yet.

Your situation also sounds similar to 2 other anomalies that we've seen on the RPi with knewc in the past (although I don't recall seeing either of these with the most recent releases of knewc).

One is that sometimes the video (including audio) will continue playing in the background. I think that this would happen when knewc was timing out and dying, but leaving Kodi playing the video. And, as you said, when pressing the Kodi stop, it would stop the video (and audio) playback, but since knewc had died, the playback position wasn't being saved to Nextpvr. I'm wondering if in your situation, Kodi is still playing the video, but it is obscured by other screens so you're only hearing the audio.

The other anomaly was that sometimes it seemed that somehow 2 copies of knewc were running on the client at the same time. We would see this in the recording list when we'd use the up/down or page up/page down navigation to move through the list. We'd get a display of the updated list screen, but then shortly we'd get another update with another view of the list. (i.e. the 2 instances were at different points in the recording list so the screens would be displaying different shows). It was very bizarre. Again, this was a fairly rare occurrence, and I haven't seen it happen in quite a while.

I know that this post isn't going to be helpful to Martin to really do any troubleshooting. But maybe it will give you a couple of things to test or look at if it happens to you again. And you'll be able to actually capture logs as it's happening.

The logs would be for sub's benefit if it relates to sessions getting confused.
