As a Test, open the 'Run' Dialouge and type "SFC /SCANNOW". This will check to see if all core windows files are in their original state. If it does return an eroor, your gonna have to figure out how make the recovery console work.

ok, so i guess its not a corrupted system files problem or anything like that. Sounds like a registry issue. Is it only My Documents/My Music/ My computer, etc. or does it do that with all folders opned in explorer?

And one more thing, that youve probably already tried, but, under Folder options, reset all folder optiions to thier defaults under the Folder View tab.

Is their a reason you're opposed to just doing a OS reinstall? It's not even a bad idea 1-2x year even when things are working. I mean, add up all the time you've spent screwing around on this, still not knowing what's wrong, and you could have put XP back on many times over.

Not trying to make it sound like a "well, duh" thing. I'm just thinking even if you find and fix whatever this is, you probably tore up 3-5 other things looking for the problem.

I'd say bite the bullet and do-over. You'll fix the problem, and get a clean system as a bonus.

Clanky Wrote:About a year ago I had a corrupt avi file causing explorer to goto 100% cpu.

I read all the thread and just as I was about to add my two cents, Clanky wrote in.

Yeah, it's probably a mildly corrupted AVI. I'm a tech (everyone roll eyes now) and thought my system was clean. But I also know that spyware can get to even the very best of us, so I checked everything else...

I actualy went the root of reinstalling, after backing up, and everything went smoothly until I started to mess with that blasted AVI. I didn't clue in, because it seemed to play OK in VLC.

I can't remember all the specifics but...

The AVI has corrupt info, like aspect ratio, and codec stuff, and everytime the system touches that file, whether it be Explorer, or Net Neighborhod, the computer climbs to 100 per cent CPU.

I can't for the life of me remember what it's called, but at Microsoft, there's something in the registry that tells explorer NOT to look at certain data when you file manage...

Renaming the file won't help, because just touching the file in Explorer causes explorer.exe to fault...

You can also log into safe mode, and open a command line and delete the file, and then magically your fine. But what about the movie you wanna watch?

Well, I think I finally found the solution by downloading an avi fix type program that went through and did it's thing.

The problem went away went away...

Right click on you desktop & create a New Folder. Then open this folder.
If that works ok, cpu not 100%, then navigate around your hd from the New Folder until cpu reaches 100%
