tipstir Wrote:I've been monitoring the memory and increased the page file. My 1GB I always had 600 to 700MB free with GBPVR and 3 MVPs now it dropped to 200MB or even less. Then the system slows down. I know to fix this would be to increase the RAM to 2GB. But looks like some sort of memory leaking is going on. 3 MVP GBPVR.exe are using a lot of RAM and they're not being used. Sometimes I go back to 600MB and sometimes it 128MB So it now 331MB free.

I don't know what happen? If I stop GBPvR Recording Service memory goes back up to 800MB free.
I'm not convinced there is any memory leak occurring. Infact, I'm pretty sure there isnt.

If you feel there is though, then look into it the right way - run perfmon to produce a graph of the 'private bytes' of GBPVRRecordingService.exe. Graph it over day or so, so that you can see if there is any increase, and if so, when it occurs (all in one big chunk, or gradually over the course of the day).

If you've got a lot of channels and/or many days of listings, then you'll probably find that there is a big jump in memory usage when the first automated EPG update occurs. This memory will then be freed, but .net wont return it to the operating system unless Window's tells .net that is running low and really needs it. Subsequent EPG updates would be allocated this same memory again by .net.

Looking at the memory usage or free memory in Windows Task Manager doesnt tell you squat, and gives pretty confusing information for those that dont understand exactly what it is telling you.

Plugins - your defaults except for FM Radio
Other - Weather, Cinema, Video Archive, EPGExtra

Channels EPG 7 days advance, you think that's what causing the problem with memory so low.

I agree that the free memory doesn't neccesarily tell you if there is a memory leak unless you monitor over a longer period. But it does give an accurate view of the memory in use which is useful when you are trying to figure out why your machine is acting slugish. Most of the problems that I see are usually on my XP box and are almost always tied to drives that are mounted when I was connected to a domain server and disconnected when I'm at home. That caused really long delays until I would disconnect the drive.

On my PVR which is on win2k you can have basically no free memory for quite a while and then finally an event occurs that frees a bunch of memory. This was very evident in the last version of GB-PVR when I was playing MP3s. It looked like a memory leak but every once in a while the memory would be returned to the OS so like you told me way back when, it wasn't a leak, but it did affect performance on my machine. It seems like windows doesn't do a very good job of memory management with .net especially on win2k.

As I'd said above, use perfmon and graph the processes over time if you want to look for memory leaks. Task Manager is not going to show you this.

My GBPVR installation starts at about 90 meg and after I play the first recording it goes to about 130meg and stays there. Playing another video kicks it up to 140 but it comes back down to 130 when it is done.
Entering a bunch of plugins kicks it up to 170meg and then it stays around there. Sometimes when I enter a plugin it goes up each time and doesn't come back down immediately but it does eventually work its way down.
Anyway the fact that you see 170meg sounds about right.

Yeah, if you're running a few plugins (weather etc), and in the US (lots of listings), then 170MB sounds pretty normal.

Perfmon, I'll into this... But I also run this GBPVR on a wireless laptop for testing and usage just like you do with your desktop to HDTV, in my case laptop to HDTV. Since that doesn't host the 3x MVP (GBPVR.exe) the memory is normal on that PC. It has the same amount of RAM 1GB. Has the memory requirement for MVP increase are is it just the same?

But that's just a client on your wireless laptop, right? Does it get the channel listing and have all the plugins that your desktop has?

No, it hasnt increase. I cant talk for any plugins you might be using though. Some like the weather plugin are known to use heaps of memory.
