Convert mpg to dvr-ms

You could always just get a DVB-T capture card, set the BDA Multiplexer option to DVR-MS, set auto-convert to ASAP to convert dvr-ms files to mpeg2, make sure the option for deleting the original file is turned off.

Yeah, I had originally thought of and tried that. Unfortunately, an important part of my pvr / media centre setup is the ability to stream recordings and DVDs around the house using the EWA and GBPVR in client mode. I had to have the recordings set to mpg in order to make this possible.

I've just been playing with the wmcmd.vbs script and it takes forever to transcode stuff. If WAF is important then the time taken to get good quality might not help things.

I haven't had chance to try it yet but I figured I would set it to transcode overnight - hopefully an hour long recording wouldn't take longer than that to transcode?!

I know what you mean - we use an MVP to warch all our recordings and sometimes my wife wants to start watching a recording when it is in progress. This works fine for mpg files created with my analogue tuners but not so well with the dvr-ms files created by my DVB-T cards.

It really all comes down to the settings you use for the WMV output. I'm working on a project for some people where they want to transcode mpg (or dvr-ms) files to WMV using a 2-pass process with WME9, 720x576 with video at 823Kb/s VBR and stereo audio at 96Kb/s 44KHz VBR. Transcoding a 1 hour programme takes at least 4 hours but can take 6-8 hours depending on source. The results, however, are virtually indistinguishable from the original even with fast motion and the compression ratio is usually about 5:1 (their main goal).

I'd recommend making a 1 or 2 minute manual recording with GB-PVR then create a WME9 profile (PRX file) with the Profile Editor. This is the easiest way to used the wmcmd.vbs file...

You can then just tweak the settings using the profile editor.
