Absolutely not, and even if the technology allowed it there are analog broadcasts still on that part of the cable spectrum. That is why the cable companies want people to get off analog to allow room for digital HD.

So, I have my 1600 sort of working , and then Shaw decided to turn off almost all of my clear QAM. They have graced me with one HD channel, a yule log. It's beautiful, bringing a tear to my eye, remembering Roy Orbison on PBS, and missing him...

I do not know if my 1 hour program of some guy stoking a fire is in sync. So I would like to get a sample ts file.

Certainly I can play with on the fly transcoding, but I won't be sure my transcode settings are working right unless I have something big, with sync audio.

I know that I have some trouble with dvr-ms files and MEncoder for example and have to use an alternate version of FFmpeg

Although for me, it seems a no brainer to use ts over dvr-ms --- don't know why people want that except for compatibility with MCE...

Anyway, can someone make a ts file (1080i/AC3 (AAC)) as large as your upload permits, for me to play with. (Hoping for an NTSC AND a PAL file...

Thanks

I was hoping this discussion was going in a direction that would help me. Have a HVR-1600 now hooked up and receiving about 15 Clear QAM channels (both SD and HD)... and I was counting on some kind of on-the-fly transcoding to be able to feed my MVPs. What other transcoding options exist to get Clear Qam over to an mediaMVP compatible format?

I've been using a PVR-150->GBPVR->MVP combo for a couple of years now but my US cable provider (ComCast) just served notice that they are dropping nearly all of the analog cable channels and switching basic users over to digital (many encrypted but about 20 should remain Clear).

Looks like Spicy and I were fighting the same battles at about the same time... including digital channel mapping, slo-mo ac3, and now this. I guess I was chasing a wild hare when I thought that setting the GBPVR config option for "Auto-convert TS recordings to:" to MPEG-2 would do the trick... What is that option all about?

Please know that at least my silence means I'm reseraching. I'm committed to finding a solution

Great to hear Zehd... if you need any more sample files (NTSC) I can probably capture them.

My silence also means that I'm researching but I'll share some of my findings since htewam is also seeking the "path".

The direction that I've been going is trying to transcode the ts files into mpg. Not as seamless and I hoped. The two programs that I have found to be more successful are Super and mpeg2vcr. (I have tried alot of programs) Super is free and you can download a trial of the other. What I've found is MVP has problems with the audio and not so much the video. The audio has two streams. I've been able to convert by leaving the video as is and converting the audio to MPEG2 Layer 1. What I can't convert in one I can on the other. I like Super the best; not only is it free but you can convert many files at once.

I'm still experimenting and my final goal is to be able to automate the process as a nightly batch. I hope this helps.

On a side note, I too have Comcast, digital, but they said they will be streaming both analog and digital even after the Feb'09 deadline. Also, thank you Zehd for helping in the "quest".

Until zehd has a better solution I suggest NTSC users change <MVPFFmpegTranscodeTS> to this if you are using the TS Mux

Code:
<MVPFFmpegTranscodeTS>-y -i "{SOURCE_FILE}" -b 2400k -ar 48000 -ac 2 -ab 128 -r 29.97 -s 352x240 -f svcd "{DEST_FILE}"</MVPFFmpegTranscodeTS>

You won't have livetv but recordings should be the same quality as xvid transcodes.

PAL users could try changing -r 25 and -s 352x288

zehd Wrote:Well to feed my hobby of supporting GB-PVR through apps and docs, I plunked down 125 CAD to get that 1600, to get 4 sports SD channels and 1 HD Channel.

I won't complain too loudly about spending money for things I won't personally use, just tol benefit others. I think there might be a few other people here who have spent far more supporting people on different continents...

And it's all fun!!

I'd like to say thanks for your efforts. This is exactly what I love about the GBPVR community - people contribute what they can and the sum total of all those contributions makes this fun.

I've used Super and like it too, but IIRC, the full name is "SUPER © - Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer and it's just a GUI front end for ffmpeg and mencoder. It should be possible to use those tools directly once you've figured out the settings.

Yes Super is great for help with the command lines. Trouble is, when you have trouble and start to google, you end up in this thread.
