Cox tried that here until recently and 2 years ago when I got my first cablecard, I knew 10 times more than the tech did (that is scary). Granted, 2 plus years ago it was mostly used for Tivo only but when they could get $55 for a truck roll, they saw that as extra income. Now, they don't want the trouble but there should be none.
If they give you any trouble, I'd give them hell. They won't know much about the 2650 anyway.

Dumb question alert----

First: Looking at the Hauppauge site it makes it sound like you can watch anything that you subscribe to. If we just want to use it as a live tv tuner, then does that record freely flag still matter? Does the flag only apply to recording or does it also kill live TV? If Live TV will work on all my channels, then I would be able to dump my STB rental for the less expensive Cablecard rental.

Next: It notes the requirements are Win7 only. Is this a Win7 MediaCenter thing or if we use NPVR will Vista or XP work?

Yes, it still matters. You wont be able to watch and record everything. You'll only be able do this on channels marked as 'copy freely'. The channels marked 'copy once' or 'copy never' will not be usable in NPVR.

After I posted, I realized it was likely that NPVR would not be able to since it is based on recording technology. Do you know if these will be able to be viewed in Win 7 MediaCenter? I would not think so, but the Hauppauge site claims you can even watch HBO. Also, any thoughts on if the NPVR part will work on Vista?

Yes, you should be able to watch and record everything in Win7 media center. It implements the DRM required to record/view premium channels that are marked 'copy once'.

Thanks for the great answers. Well I am not usually an early adopter with hardware, but I pulled the trigger and ordered one! Now off to Time Warner...

Went to my local comcast office and picked up a cablecard self install kit, which just became available today. Now all I need is the DCR 2650. Has anyone heard any update on shipment status?

I haven't heard anything official, but I think they've been delayed a couple of weeks.

@Roy - update us on the cablecard self install when you do it. Maybe I can talk our local Charter office into letting me do it, if I can sound intelligent. Party line from corporate is a $49.95 install fee, no DIY.

BTW - Haup Facebook page entry from yesterday says ship "next week".
