This approach, or looking at the digitaldevices documentation etc, is the "guess work" I was describing. No developer writes software with any way to test it, and try stuff out.

It's not just a matter of adding a few lines of code. It needs collecting a lot of data from the streams, and passing into an interface on the driver, and this stuff is hard.

Honestly, looking at the MP code doesn't really help. I already know generally what needs to be done to get CI working - and that is all that is gleaned by looking at MP's code. The trick is actually implementing it with my components etc.

Does Germany have free smartcards for some services? There is a possibility with some captured German transport streams, played back by my signal generator, and CI module + smartcard that works with this service, it might be possible for me to setup some environment to be able to test CI.

But give it a go please. There are many german users who would try NextPVR (ArgusTV is dead and with MediaPortal or DVBMosaic there's no real progress), but DigitalDevices is the number one here and i guess 90% are using it with a CI.

Does your service in Germany have free smartcards? Ultimately getting a smartcard and some example streams is an absolute requirement before I can even try anything.

No, I don't think so... Sad
Also, the smartcard is activated via the satelite stream in my case (HD+)
The reason why they are so keen on that system is that they want to make extra money. (You don't get add-free programs, just  better picture quality. Watching SD on my 55" OLED is a real pain, even HD is just okay.....)
I'm hoping that their business model breaks apart soon anyway. They even have good (android tv etc.) apps, but the license politics still don't make that a full replacement.

As puenktchen pointed out, digital devices is indeed the biggest player here, because the cards just work perfect. And, thats why I'm supprised about the CI beeing the problem --> I thought the decoding is done in the card itself, as no software I ever used even noticed that there was as CI in place and the CI is connected directly to the card?
Mediaportal indeed shows no progress and TVmosaic - which I'm still using - seems to have closed their business. You can still buy licenses online but there are no updates, no support, nothing anymore. And as TVmosiac requires a server activation I fear that server dying every day, rendering my pvr dead.

You said I should disable it and then search channels. Would I be able to later watch them with the CI enabled again or turns the CI activation the card completely unusable again?

Traxx83 is right. No free smartcards here. And even if you buy you one, this will not work because you need access to the sat stream every few days to renew the decrytion keys.

Yeah, I hear you both, and these are the reasons why we no longer have CI support in NextPVR. There is just no easy way for me to do it now that I no longer have a TV system that uses DVB-CI.

If one of your wanted to arrange a machine I could remote into for a couple of weeks, with everything required hooked up, I could see if there was something I could do about it. I know it's a big ask for anyone, but otherwise you'll just have to live with NextPVR not having CI support.

Unfortunately it's not just something that happens for free, and any player that supports it has had to put in some effort to make it happen. It needs to collect various bits of info from the stream, build up a structure, and pass it to a driver. It's not a huge amount of work, but enough to be complicated without anyway to test it.

(things do get more complicated if you need to provide access CI module menus)

Since you have some programming skills and access since NextPVR does allow creation of extra devices and you could create an app that delivers data to stdout or passes a url if that is feasible.
