How to build ir reciever...

Works with WinLIRC.....hmmm this probably would be cheaper to build than usb-uirt...and its basically the same thing....

It would be cheaper if I had more than one serial port on the back of my PC & didn't have to buy a serial card or a usb to RS232 adaptor (if that would even work).
Right now the directv serial cable get's it.
I was thinking about using the IRDA header on my motherboard, but I don't know if my MB has one.

Does winLirc do parallel ports or the midi interface on a soundcard like LIRC?
I couldn't find it on the website.

I built my own serial IR receiver when I first started my HTPC project. I liked the idea I could do it my self and it was going to be really cheap.

But, what I found was that it turned into a resource hog. I was running WinLirc and Girder and because the receiver would accept every IR command that came its way I would often get false positives. Like a code from my stereo would cause something to happen on the HTPC even though I hadn't put the stereo code in the winlirc. It was a fun project but I have found for the money its eaiser to get a MCE remote or IMON and customize that for your needs. It's been a lot less trouble in the long run.

Sometimes it's just better to not re-invent the wheel. Then again, if we didn't, we would all have Tivo and none of us would be here.
