Hi Sub,

Just curious, what's the purpose of GBPVRRecordingService.exe? Is it normal that it uses 99% CPU and 50-100megs of memory?

How much memory does GBPVR.exe need too?

It performs all the recordings and updates the EPG. Depending on configuration, other jobs include MVP server, web server, automatic file conversion, post processing, parallel processing etc.

No.

Yes, particularly if you have a large EPG. .NET apps are pretty memory hungry. Its not using as much as reported via task manager though, which is where I assume you're looking. Also much of the memory is actually shared with other .NET processes, and reported in the total for all.

How much memory does GBPVR.exe need too?

It depends. When you first start an instance of GBPVR.exe, it might report something like 60MB, but if you happen to click the minimize button you may see it drop down to 5 - 10MB. Task manager isnt the best tool for monitoring memory usage.

I also noticed taking lots of memory - GBPVR was up to 150M. My computer was almost nonresponsive this morning. I've had to reboot a few times due to this. I'm wondering if it's due to updating the guide. I haven't updated to the new database, yet.

150MB could be normal depending on your EPG, particularly if you're a US zap2it user with large number channels and large number of days.

GB-PVR uses the memory when it needs it during the processing of the EPG, then frees the memory, but...The way .net memory management works means that .net will not free the memory back to the operating system until the system really needs it somewhere else. Effectively, this means the peak memory usage will be continue to be allocated to GB-PVR until the operating system is critically low.

There are other posts in the forums about CPU utilization. A lot have found a DirectX version issue and use an older version of a directX dll

As far as memory usage goes, That is appropriate for the recording service. Mine uses up to 150 MB while updating EPG, and tyupically 50-60 when doing recording. If I playback while recording it has gone up to 140 MB on my system.

I'm using an MVP as well, so I have a pretty high memory use when I'm playing back.

Well, another day off and another opportunity to play around with my computer.

So Sub, I'm sorry to bother you again with this but I'd really like to get to the bottom of this.

My GBPVRRecordingService.exe regularly fluctuates between 25%-99% even when GBPVR isn't running, EPG is not being updated, no post-processing (like comskip) taking place, no recording taking place. My GBPVRRecordingServices.log is 0kb. It fluctuates constantly and quickly tops the list of cpu processes in seconds.

I've taken a snapshot of this while using that program you guys talked about in some previous thread (that's better than task manager?).

Let me know what info I can provide to help figure this out.

The reason why i'm anxious to figure this out is because my recordings are suffering. The video stutters, audio out of sync or skips whenever I try to record and watch a pre-recorded program at the same time. (If I don't watch anything and record at the same time it's fine).

Everything was fine before 97.12, I think? (I'm using 97.13)...

Try deleting the 0 byte log file and rebooting. Hopefully it'll then start producing logs. I cant do anything without a log file.

I tried to delete the 0kb log file but it said it was in use. So I end process GBPVRRecordingService.exe in task manager. It generated this 2kb file at 6:41pm (see attachment).

At 6:44pm, the computer finished restarting and I took some screen shots for you to see an example of how GBPVRRecordingService.exe climbs and drops. However no new log file is created that shows what's going on between 6:44pm and now.

Is there a way to force it to write to the log file? (Maybe it's my logging level? It's set at INFO).

Set the logging level back to Debug, otherwise its missing most of the useful info.
