Thanks for the info Daza. I was just coming here to let everyone know about how I fixed the problem and saw your post. Good info, I might try that to see if I get better results.
I have already been using GraphEdit to look at my media files. With codecs being so problematic, the GraphEdit utility is required.
I saw that my Windows Media files were using a SageTV decoder. I don't use SageTV (I only installed it for testing), so I just uninstalled the program and made sure the codecs were unregistered and blown away. That helped.
Swapped the quartz.dll with an older version and it seemed to help a little bit (although not much).
Still had some problems with other codecs installed on my system (and it is very disturbing how many get installed by default with various programs, especially considering that all of them want to be the *only* one). I tried all kinds of different combinations and no joy (GraphEdit and DECCHECK saved alot of time, it could have been much worse if I had to modify merits or unregister/register for every combination).
I started reading more of the forums around here and kept seeing that Sub and others were frequently mentioning Cyberlink. WIth this in mind, I decided to install PowerDVD 7 and set those codecs as the preferred. It helps that those codecs are fully suppported by Windows Media Player 10.
JOY! The playback problems have been resolved to a point of near perfection (relative to my setup capabilities).
So, in a nutshell, getting rid of some nasty codecs, the quartz.dll modification, and installing the "right" codecs has resolved my issues. The most substantial increase in quality came from the PowerDVD codecs. Wow.
Anyway, thanks to everyone for their responses. Great community and programs
