OSD with picture in overlay mode?

I thought there was a paragraph on this in the Wiki once, but I cannot find it anymore. Anyways, I just setup a new installation, with a PVR 150, on Windows 2000. When the OSD comes up, the video disappears, and will not return until the OSD goes away. Is there any real way around this? Is this a limitation of the Overlay mode?

If this is caused by Overlay mode, will VMR7 mode in GBPVR work in Windows 2000 if I can find the correct build of directx that supports it? In other words, does GBPVR query the DirectX/DirectDraw system to see if it is available, or does it just disable it when it sees Windows 2000? There is some chatter on the internet about how DirectX 9.0b included it, then it may have been removed later.

Have you tried it with a different video decoder? I seem to remember this happened for one use with the Cyberlink decoder, but was fine with the Intervideo decoder or something like that.

I am using the Intervideo decoder; I will try some other ones.

I cant remember whether it was those exact decoders. It was quite a while back that I read this.

I tried the ATI/Cyberlink decoder as well, and it does the same thing.

The card is a Radeon 7000, and the drivers are a recent Catalyst release. There is also an integrated video card in the system which is not in use.

I should note that if I press the yellow button on the Hauppauge 150 remote, I get an entirely blank screen. As far as I could tell on my other PC, all the four color buttons do is bring up overlays, so I'm not sure why the yellow one shows as blank.

I also noticed that if I switch to 16 bit color mode, instead of the screen going blank when the overlay comes up, I get a black crosshatch over the picture. I'm going to try some different skins to see if it makes a difference.

In 32-bit color mode, instead of a crosshatch, the entire area above the OSD is black.

System config here. Note that 2-video cards are installed, the integrated Intel graphics (nothing plugged into this), and the ATI Radeon 7000. Currently the Radeon shows up as Display #2. Display #1 (Intel integrated) is not in use. The reason for the Radeon 7000 is that it has TV output, which I plan to use after getting it as polished as possible.

Surely someone must have seen this before, sometime. I suspect one of three things which I am going to investigate:

1) Video card. The radeon 7000 is rather old, and probably poorly tested in driver releases. I will try another card too.
2) Operating System. I am using Windows 2000, and I cannot try anything other than overlay mode. I will try XP.
3) MPEG decoder. However, I have tried a Cyberlink/ATI one, and one from Intervideo, and they both do the same thing.

If anyone knows, when I call up an OSD, is there any image from the skin that gets overlayed on the whole screen, i.e. one that should be transparent? If so, there is probably a problem with the way the overlay gets blended.

When GB-PVR starts playing a video, it ask directshow what the fully transparent colour key is, it in turn asks your video card drivers. Each time GB-PVR draws the OSD, it starts by clearing the screen with that 'fully transparent colour' that was reported by directshow. When the overlay renderer is drawing the video frame and OSD, and pixels using that 'fully transparent colour' will end up being gaps through to the underlying video.

In this case, something isnt reporting the correct colour. I'm guessing the video card drivers. This colour varies from card to card - some use slight off black, some use green etc.

If so, there is probably a problem with the way the overlay gets blended.

Even though there has been two or three reports of this over the last couple of years, I'm confident I'm doing things the right way, and the problem is in one of the other components used. Its worked fine for thousands of other users.

I'm using a Radeon 7K (with excellent results) and I have integrated graphics (with no problems). I do not experience the issue that is being reported (OSD causing video problems). It works exactly as advertised for me. The only difference in my setup and yours is that I am using Windows XP Professional (SP2). It could be a Windows 2K problem or your particular graphics chip. I really don't think it has anything to do with the 7K (at least from my experience).
