Client on Wireless

I am just curious if anyone has gotten the client to work well on an 802.11b wireless network. The client works great but recordings are to jumpy/skip to watch. I am sure this is due to the bandwidth of 802.11b. Has anyone else been able to watch good video (recordings or live tv) over b?

I have been playing around with the client on 802.11b and its pretty much just a no go. The available "usable" bandwidth just really isn't up to handling that much data. I'm sure if you lower the bitrate enough you would eventually be able to watch a recording, but by that time it would most likely be of such low quality you would rather not watch it. I haven't done extensive testing, but everything I was messing around with did not provide any usable results.

i don't think it's just the bandwidth as a 54meg 'G' network is just as flakey. wireless networks keep renegotiating their connection leading to a few seconds downtime every few minutes. it's a problem when copying large files let alone when you need a continuous stream to watch video. you can increase the buffer size to some stupid amount and it will help in this respect but of course you then get a large delay when opening the stream

I am using a wireless G device in a PC to watch recordings off my main server.
No problems now.

At one point I was getting stutters every 8 to 12 mins.
I found that if I used my wifi router as anything other than a wireless access point I would get interuptions.

So in otherwords plugging my GBPVR recording server into a port on the d-link wifi router caused stutering.

Pluging it into my other router or switch doesn't.

I've also tried using the client on a 802.11g network and have no problems except for a bit of a delay when starting to watch any video.

I wouldn't expect it to work over 802.11b.

I'm curious to try out a 802.11n network..

I get quite a bit of stuttering on my g network but the access point on my pvr machine is junk so (instead of spending £40 on a new g one), I have just orderded a full pre-n network kit - should be here tomorrow.

Streaming DivX over B should be fine, you'll just see a delay at the start or fast forwarding. Just don't expect this with a USB 1.1 connection - prefer PCI and maybe PCMCIA.

You'll have issues with MPEG2 though with B, G networks should be better but make sure you disable the B compatibility in your routers or else your through-put is degraded by at least 20%.

Finally, you people getting N will probably knock out the existing B and G networks around you...that's the delay in standardizing N. Your though-put and range will be amazing though.

I have two clients over a G network. B compatibility is enabled and both clients can watch mpeg's at the same time without any hickup at all. I use a Linksys WRT54GS router and all linksys 54 GS type clients. Quite often there are other clients active (browsing the net ...) without hickpus.

I previously used a dlink G-type. This was a real disaster. I exchanged it for the linksys for this reason.
