I'm having some trouble getting GBPVR to run. It installed without raising an error, but when I try and start it, it crashes. The dialog is the standard application crash "Send / Don't Send" one.

The error signature is:

Code:
EventType : clr20r3    P1 : gbpvr.exe    P2 : 1.0.2379.26398    P3 : f
P4 : system    P5 : 2.0.0.0    P6 : 4333ae87    P7 : 5a2    P8 : 0
P9 : system.io.filenotfoundexception

The error detail is absolutely huge, containing (amongst other things) a dump of each memory range gbpvr had allocated. It also doesn't seem to be cut'n'pasteable.

When I try and run the config program, I'm getting an "unhandled exception". The message states:

Code:
Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click
Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.
If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E).

In 'Details' it states quite a bit about how to turn on JIT debugging, and some potentially useful information in the form of:

Code:
************** Exception Text **************
System.IO.FileNotFoundException: The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)
   at Config.xfd6951461fe46d87.x1f0684532099dac8(Object xdf2e3583f942db7b, EventArgs xc4f45905cb1fc7ba)

   at System.Windows.Forms.Control.ControlNativeWindow.WndProc(Message& m)
at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.Callback(IntPtr hWnd, Int32 msg, IntPtr wparam, IntPtr lparam)

It then goes on to detail the versions of all the dlls and so on that are loaded - but that list is long, so I haven't pasted it here to try and keep this already long post to a length where maybe one or two people will read it... If there's something important to check in there, I'll paste it in another message.

If I click 'continue', the config program does then load, but there's nothing in the majority of the listboxes. Attempting to make any change brings up another unhandled exception, probably with much the same detail.

The target machine is an Athlon (Thunderbird core) / ABIT KT7 / GeForce FX5600 / Creative Labs AWE32 / Hauppauge WinTV Nova-T (early version - the one based on IIRC the SAA7146 chip), running a fairly clean install of Win2000, with very little software installed. I've installed SP4, the SRP, IE6SP1, DX9, the .NET framework v2.0, MDAC 2.8sp1, MSXML 6, and all the patches windows update could find. The drivers and application that came with the card works - well, up to a point, anyway. The app throws errors when I do certain things in the interface (like right clicking on most of the controls!), and has deigned not to show certain channels - generally the more useful ones - but it's not a total failure. I've managed to get a decent rendition of (for example) BBC4, channel five, sky three, E4+1, and a whole host of more useless channels - so I think it's just a crappy piece of software, rather than an actual fault with the install. It certainly gives off that general air of crappyness that's made me come looking for a proper application. Which is why I'm here. Sadly, I haven't got GBPVR running yet. People keep recommending MythTV to me, but that requires more of a change than I was planning to make to the system...

"File not found" (though irritatingly without saying *which* file in a way I've noticed) would suggest I've missed installing something. I did a search, and decided it could be a mux - and lo, there was a useful tool to check these out called MuxChecker. I ran it, and it said I have no muxes installed.
The original app does show me a whole load of channels, including several from each multiplex it's detected. I had a poke around and couldn't see any obvious .ax file to register, so I guess the original app is doing something wierd and internal to get a channel out of the multiplex. Following a link from a post in this thread I got hold of a copy of the CyberLink Mux - and MuxChecker now shows this as installed. This didn't fix the problems running GBPVR or the config program though.

I'm now out of ideas - I haven't seen anything obvious in searching. (I'm beginning to wonder if this works on Win2K at all, despite the website clearly stating it does.) Ideas anyone?

I think its just a matter of updating your version of windows media player. GB-PVR uses WMP for showing visualization when playing music, and I think the default version installed with Win2k needs to be updated to a newer version to resolve this dependency.

Didn't spot a dependancy on WMP listed anywhere. I'll try updating that. It's entirely true I hadn't updated it - so it's still on 6.4, although with several security patches applied...

(WindowsUpdate now DLing WMP9)...

Yup - GBPVR now starts OK, though it's now started telling me my TVcard doesn't exist, so I've now got another problem to solve...

If its the early Nova-T, then the default drivers arent BDA drivers. I seem to remember there was a download link for the (technotrend) BDA drivers on the Hauppauge web site though.

Couldn't find anything on the Hauppauge site, but I did find the Technotrend site (A google search turning up some combined linux drivers hinted that the cards were identical), and I've now got BDA compatible drivers. I still don't get all the available channels though...

I'm getting plenty of shopping channels, some dead stuff which I guess is either not broadcasting at the times I'm checking, or possibly is encrypted, loads of radio channels (some of which work fine, but others sound very very broken - possibly a decoding/playback related error) and two borderline useful channels (where useful is of course relative to the shopping channels) - E4+1 and sky three. This is with the config saying "look at all possible frequencies". If I restrict it to Tunbridge Wells transmitter I get a few more (which is odd, because I thought "search all" meant "all") - I then get BBC four and channel 5 back, but nothing as useful as BBC News 24, for example.

I'm now wondering if I need to update the firmware on the card to get it to pick up channels properly. The freeview box picks up many more channels than this (though it sucks at MPEG decompression - the channels I do get via this card look far better than how the freeview box manages to display them).

(If I do need a firmware update, where do I get it from? I can't see a mention on either the Technotrend or Hauppauge websites of a firmware download).

There are a number of muxes that you need to pick up. You'll probably find that the channels missing point to one mux not being received which may be down to signal strength. To see what is where, try here...

Well, from that list, it looks like I'm getting A, B and C, but no 1, 2, or D.

Distinctly odd. Particularly given the Freeview box can get stuff on 1 and 2 (not checked D).

Code:

at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.Callback(IntPtr hWnd, Int32 msg, IntPtr wparam, IntPtr lparam)

I get this when trying to watch channel 5 or E4+1, but not BBC four or Sky three. Seems to appear only during programmes and not during adverts.

The channel continues to play in the background if I ignore the box, but I can't interact with GBPVR while it's displayed. If I click "continue", it comes up again immediately, and after a few times then finally crashes.

Ideas anyone? What do I need to update this time?

I'm not sure why you're getting the error, but you can probably get rid of it by setting <BDAEnableDvbSubtitles>false</BDAEnableDvbSubtitles> in config.xml
