I've pretty much already given everything I have to say above.

For those with high CPU usage problems, what resolution is your desktop at?
I saw serious cpu tanking when I ran GBPVR at 800x600 while playing back 720x480 video.
It went down to almost nothing when I changed the res to 720x480.
My card is an fx5200.

Overlay was low also.

Interesting suggestion, but I don't have that resolution available on my card.

Tried two sets of completely different hardware now and pans and anything like cars moving etc. are all shuddery on both machines. In both cases the software components I installed were all the same.

I'm sure I've heard that AC3 filter can cause stuttering video - can anyone else corroborate this?

1. are you using overlay???
2. what you are describing is not stuttering, its tearing, a diagonal stepped line across your screen.

No, I don't have tearing - I had tearing before on my main machine, sorted that out by switching to VMR7.

I can't really think of a good to describe what I'm seeing. It's rather like watching a movie at a reduced frame rate - instead of smoothly moving objects you can see them move across the screen in jumps. If the camera is moving about a lot or there is a lot of stuff moving quickly it looks terrible.

I've tried overlay, different video codecs, different VMR modes and all sorts of other things. My configuration works perfectly in older versions of GBPVR, but not at all in the latest version. I also found the same problem even on completely different hardware (but same software for codecs and mux) when I tried on my Mac Mini (with Windows installed via boot camp).

I've been happily using GBPVR for over a year now, but the latest version is just a total no go area for me because of this.

hmm, thats really wierd, since you seem to be alone here. I apologize, but what you were describing did sound very much like tearing.
I can say that I dont see those problems, and I have crap for hardware, because I listened in grade school (reduce REUSE recycle) :p
I can post more about my setup when I get home. if you want
I wish I could help, but it seems you are destined to wait for a new release

A quick forum trawl revealed at least 2-3 other people with a seemingly identical problem so I'm not so sure its just me. I also tried two completely different lots of hardware and had the same problem.

The problem seems to be that the same codecs, MPEG mux and DVB cards behave differently under one version of GBPVR than they do under another.

Do you get the same poor performance playing an AVI file?

I haven't watched an AVI or recorded MPEG2 file in 98.08 yet.

When I have time I'll put the mac mini back to a clean windows install, then I'll do all kinds of side by side tests for you.

OK - slapped a copy of Ghost on the laptop so I can roll back to my working config, then upgraded to 98.08 again for testing.

Live TV is still very choppy (not in timeshift mode), but when the OSD is active the playback is completely smooth. As soon as the OSD disappears the playback goes choppy. In Timeshift mode, playback is smooth - which at least gives me an option I suppose. Recordings are also smooth.

There appears to be only one difference in the graphs created by the different versions. GBPVR 96.08 creates a graph with the following items:-

14:35:50.734 VERBOSE Graph contains the following filters:
14:35:50.734 VERBOSE - Default DirectSound Device
14:35:50.734 VERBOSE - Video Renderer
14:35:50.734 VERBOSE - BDA MPEG2 Transport Information Filter
14:35:50.734 VERBOSE - GB-PVR PSI Parser
14:35:50.734 VERBOSE - AC3Filter
14:35:50.734 VERBOSE - NVIDIA Video Decoder
14:35:50.734 VERBOSE - GB-PVR Flow Status
14:35:50.734 VERBOSE - MPEG-2 Demultiplexer
14:35:50.734 VERBOSE - Hauppauge Nova USB2 DVB-T TV Receiver
14:35:50.734 VERBOSE - Microsoft DVBT Network Provider

Whereas 98 has one extra item:-

15:15:49.281 VERBOSE Graph contains the following filters:
15:15:49.281 VERBOSE - Default DirectSound Device
15:15:49.281 VERBOSE - Video Renderer
15:15:49.281 VERBOSE - BDA MPEG2 Transport Information Filter
15:15:49.281 VERBOSE - MPEG-2 Sections and Tables
15:15:49.281 VERBOSE - GB-PVR PSI Parser
15:15:49.281 VERBOSE - AC3Filter
15:15:49.281 VERBOSE - NVIDIA Video Decoder
15:15:49.281 VERBOSE - GB-PVR Flow Status
15:15:49.281 VERBOSE - MPEG-2 Demultiplexer
15:15:49.281 VERBOSE - Hauppauge Nova USB2 DVB-T TV Receiver
15:15:49.281 VERBOSE - Microsoft DVBT Network Provider

Removing AC3Filter didn't make a lot of difference, nor does switching between Overlay, VMR7, VMR9 and VMR9 customer render - Live TV is choppy in all modes. In all cases as well, the CPU consumption is much, much higher than in 96.08.

Does any of this help? is there anything else you'd like to test? right at the moment I can't get at any large AVI files but I might be able to try that for you later.

Regards
Dave
