Vmr9 custom render works fine on my main monitor but when i use the option to start on second monitor the playback is choppy.

My system specs.

Yeah, this is normal. Its some limitation of Direct3D which means that only the primary monitor benefits from the video card's special DirectX features. If you try to use the second monitor, behind the scenes Direct3D tries to do everything in software, and uses extra memory buffers for copying stuff around, making this horrible mess you're describing.

The short of this that the VMR9 Custom renderer is only useful on a primary monitor.

Is this always true, or only with certain video cards?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think its always true. I did some research into it a long time back when someone reported it. I found I was getting the same thing. I only use a primary monitor so hadnt noticed it myself.

Googling on details of the APIs I'm using, I found lots of discussions on game development forums talking about this issue. A couple of people had thought they'd found work arounds, but none seem to be substantiated, and it generally seemed to be a problem for everyone on the secondary monitor.

The other renderers do not use Direct3D, so dont have this problem on a second monitor.
