Live tv on my PC across the LAN

It seems I have been thinking about this the wrong way my PC is a long way from my tv signal source and I want to be able to have an exchange over the LAN between data stored on my PC eg: Videos, music etc to watch on my TV and signals received on my TV back across the LAN via the Media MVP connection to be viewed or recorded on my PC. It sounds as though that is not possible from your explanation.

Thanks for the help Guy's, back to the drawing board (ho hum). I guess the best bet will be to build a small profile media PC to position near the TV and set top box and then stream data out from there. Ill be back!

I am researching building a media pc, but in the mean while I am trying to get to know GB-PVR a little better, I can happily play video files saved on my PC which is in a workshop a long way from my TV with Media MVP. What I want to be able to do is view live video playing on my PC in real time across my LAN through Media MVP on my TV.

This really goes back to my original question. This could be the scenario, lets say I can legitimately watch a downloaded film, only on one dedicated pc in my house, I cant (and dont particularly want to) copy it and create a file to share across the LAN, so I would like to use that PC as a server and stream the live video simultaneously across my LAN to the TV where I can watch it in comfort.

Can this be done, if so how do I set up GB-PVR and Media MVP to achieve the desired result?

I don't think that's possible. Anything you want to watch on the mvp has to be MPEg-2 format. So if you download a movie you have to transcode it to mpeg2, either transcode-first-play-later or on the fly. You can't use the mvp-tv as a "second computer-screen".

You could use VLC (Video LAN Client) to do this. You can play a downloaded movie file (or a stream) and transcode it to MPEG2 on the fly. VLC can either save this as a temporary file which you can watch on your MVP at the same time it is being recorded (the External Recorder plugin uses it this way to allow MVP users to watch streaming video, for instance.) or can act as a streaming server and stream it to another PC.

You can find examples of the VLC MPEG2 transcoding parms in the documentation for the External Recorder plugin (also in the UbuStream plugin documentation in the discussion of "channel mode").

I think this is already built-in with FFMPEG. Without doing any type of setup, I can select an .avi file from my MVP, and the GBPVR server will automatically transcode it to mpeg2 (via ffmpeg). I usually have to wait a few seconds for it to buffer up some of the file, but then it runs smooth from there. When I had my GBPVR server on a wireless network, I had to set the "MVP Transcode Pre-Play Delay" to 10000 ( this is located on the MVP tab in config).

I think you should make your GBPVR machine work on it's own, meaning you should be able to watch Live TV, view your video files (including "legitimately" downloaded files ) and whatever picture and audio files you want accessible from GBPVR. This means your PVR150 needs to have some sort of source of signal for it to receive Live TV.

You also need a source of EPG info for your TV Guide, a lot of guys here use Zap2It, but GBPVR is versatile enough to get it from an XML file, this is the method I use since Zap2It is not available for me. I gather the info from several cable guides websites and run it through TVxb, an excellent XML grabber, point GBPVR to the resultant file and presto, instant TV Guide.

For your MVP, this is important, DO NOT INSTALL/TURN OFF THE MediaMVP software, the software is not necessary to run GBPVR and will just conflict with it. Make sure you have a DHCP server, as the MVP requires this. Set GBPVR to autostart 1 server for 1 MVP, 2 servers for 2 MVPs, and so on. Although, I set mine to autostart total MVPs + 1, it makes it faster for the MVP to start again when it sometimes disconnects.

The MVP only accepts mpeg files, so to work around this you have to transcode on the fly, it is noteworthy that it requires a strong machine to transcode, otherwise you will just be frustrated. And I haven't tried of two streams being transcoded at the same time. So you might want to reconsider transcoding any favorite shows permanently to mpeg files.

I haven't tried the Ubustream plugin yet but it's something you might want to look at for webtvs.

Lastly, you were considering building a new media server to be near your TV, since the TV signal can't reach your PC, anyway, I suggest consider about the fan noise that it will generate so consider other methods of cooling like the water cooled, etc, this is one of the reasons why a lot of us have considered the MVP. Also, consider a more powerful machine with more mem if you wish to continue with the transcoding. I would also consider the hard drive size, get the most that you can afford, it gets full quickly, 300GB can only go so far. Use your extra MVP on another TV after you create your GBPVR machine.

Well, hope this will help you out. You won't regret choosing GBPVR.

Hi, I'm wanting to hook up to my GB-PVR PC via MVP as I don't want to have my PC in my living room. I'd built a Mini-ITX PC based on an M10000 Mainboard with Nehemiah 1GHz CPU however this was not a good idea at all. Two capture cards failed to work satisfactorily using both software supplied by manufacturers, MP and GB-PVR. Anyway, the question that I'd wanted to ask was whether or not an 802.11g Wireless Ethernet Bridge such as a Linksys WET54G needs to be used for live TV and video playback rather than an 802.11b Wireless Ethernet Bridge such as a WET11B?.

Web-radio seems to work alright however live TV and video playback does not. Am almost certain that 802.11b does not provide enough bandwidth however I thought that I'd better ask on this forum.

Regarding bridging a Wireless Router does anyone know whether or not there are any Wireless Modem/Router/Firewall/Switches that are on the market (in the U.K.) that can be configured for use as a bridge as opposed to needing to buy a dedicated device such as a WET54G?.

Going down another route to do the same thing can anyone recommend any Powerline Ethernet devices for use with a GB-PVR PC and MVP for live TV and video playback (guess that 85Mbps would be needed)?.

Was thinking about opting for a ZyXEL PL100.
