anyone record shows at half d1 resolution around 2500 kb size at cbr? I'm viewing on SD CRT (sony 20 and 36"). do you notice any artifacts? or, is it pretty comparable to a dvd at 720x480?

I use the (LOW = 2000-2746Kbps VBR/352x480 resolution/128kps audio) settings for some recordings and they rarely contain artifacts on my 32" RCA console tv when viewing thru the MediaMVP. The filesize for a 30 minute recording is usually around 586 Megs. I personally avoid using CBR.

I use svcd format for video (480x480, 2520kbits/sec constant), with the audio at 224k/s, 48khz sample rate, for the recordings I make with GB-PVR.

Purists may turn-up their noses, but, to my middle-aged eyes  , this looks identical to the source signal (Dish Network 301 receiver s-video out) when played through an mvp connected to a 34 inch JVC SD TV. Also, the ancient pc I use as a server can still be used for other purposes while streaming these files to the mvp.

I use the 48khz sample rate so that I can burn to dvd those shows I wish to save without having to do any transcoding.

i think tivos w/o dvd burners also save at 480x480...but they use up to 5mpbs. can u copy 480x480 to dvd program and it'll work in any dvd player?

does it look better than vhs quality at normal 2 hr per 120 minute tape? the the pictures look softer than compared to original show, or to a 720x480 full dvd size?

In my experience, there is no way to say for sure that something will work in every player. I have burned discs that play perfectly on one of the three stand-alone dvd players in my house, but don't on one or more of the others. There is no obvious reason for this behavior, and I'm not ambitious enough to do the kind of systematic experimentation that might discover a pattern to it. As they say, Your Mileage May Vary.

Last time I recorded at 480x480 & tried to burn it to DVD, the app told me it wasn't a legal DVD format & had to transcode it to either D1 or half D1
So now most shows I record at half DVD resolution.

VBR 3500 to 4500.
After comskip & comclean do their thing i'm left with files anywhere between 550 & 700 MB's.

They look good to me.
Their mostly home improvement shows so I thought using a higher res was pointless.

Since I don't record that much space isn't a so much an issue that i'd play around with seeing how low I could go on bitrate.

Which dvd authoring app are you using? DVD Lab Pro gives a warning, but it will go ahead and add the mpeg to the dvd.
