Just an idea for the randomization. I havent looked at the database structure but if I assume each track has a unique numerical identifier you can use that to help you generate the list. If I had 100 songs in my DB they would be stored in the DB as 1-100. Since I know my first song is 1 and my last one is 100, all I would need to do is generate a random number between 1-100 and then SELECT that track from the library. That would be extremely quick.

On the subject of tag libraries:

As I said before, I'm more Java than c,c# etc, but I wonder if id3lib would be an easier start point than a java libray. it's open source on sourceforge.

I have used jid3lib which is also open source but on java.net.

That would be an external dll type library?? similar to ultraid3 library.

The reason against that is the keeping it up to date when things change. For a while both myself and reven were using the same library, it was quite good, but being actively developed so we very quickly got into a situation where I was expecting one version and reven another, and I would rather not get back in to that situation.

I think the packaged one that I have now should do it, and so I'm asking the developers how to make the APIC tag work...

The only reason I suggested that one is that it's fully open source. So you could do what you wanted, built in or external dll.

If you have a library already and the developers can point you in the right direction I would stick with that.

Is there any way I can set a collection to be the default collection, so that when ML2 starts and goes into random mode only tracks from the default collection are chosen [and displayed].

at the moment when I start ML2 and go to the library tracks from all collections are displayed and presumably randomly selected from.

I know I can go and choose the collection I want to use from the menu button, but i would really like to have the option to set a default collection which is used until another collection is chosen, plus the ability to use all collections for random selection as another option

my structure looks like this

presumably the library displays everything in the system area, but I'd like to only display and select from the collection I have called "Main"

Is a setup like that possible

EDIT:

I have discovered that I can get the effect I want by directly editing the database and setting the defaultcol in the collectiondata table but I cant find a way to do this in the config application whenever I try and remove a path from the system section it also removes it from the collection section should this be the case

having done this my default collection now shows blue in the config app presumably because its the default !!, the system section still includes all the paths though

I'm far too lazy for that , I click 'random' and when I don't want to hear the song I click 'skip'. As the french say: simple as good day.

I think you actually created the facility for me originally

I use them a lot, for instance it was my wifes parents 50th wedding anniversary party last week so I created a 1950s collection which I played randomly, I find this simpler than creating playlists.

I had just forgotten how to set the default

Another facility I'd like is the ability to set whether or not last fm should be updated for that collection when its playing

Seeing as how I have your attention, could I request another change which I have mentioned before.

Could you change things so that if noindex.txt exists in a folder then no tracks from that folder and any sub folders below it do not get indexed and randomly played
