You could try http://sourceforge.net/projects/gplmpgdec/, but I dont know if it does HD. Its a pretty reliable decoder though, so unlikely to be the cause of any crashes.

Got a package of decoders. Will try them one by one. Intervideo, Cyberlink and elecard.. lets c

Also try switching video renderers to see if it helps the crash (I know why you switch to Overlay, but just trying to narrow down the cause as much as possible).

I tried intervideo which crashed less often and elecard crashed less than intervideo but both of them crashed. I am still playing with different different video renders.
I just built the HTPC machine I m testing this on.. I am using onboard gma950 video. would that make any difference?

scanning right now. looks like a lot of channels are coming in, but some of them still come in as unknown! also one more problem I noticed yesterday, in the channel scan utility in configuration, the preview works for all channels I select, ie, it shows the preview fine using mdapifilter and vplug. but once in gbpvs=r itself, only a few channels can be viewed. on other channels, vplug shows a blank ecm! I am not sure why it would work in the preview mode, but not within gbpvr.
