Desktop link,script, ?? to chage screen res?

Nothing to do with GBPVR.

My main machine in the shack runs at 1600 x 1200 but I often remote into it with VNC or the like from the lounge where I only have 1280 x 1024 and have to rightclick on the background etc to change screen resolution.

Is is possible to get a link on the desktop that would change resolution? batchfile, script, reg entries or anything that I could just click on to swap between the two resolutions? I've done some searching but haven't been able to narrow the results down enough to find an answer.

I needed a similar tool/script a while back for my system. had a GBPVR user account set up to run via svideo out, and 'standard' user account for net browsing via CRT monitor. the video card wasnt good enough to do both as a dual monitor setup, so i ended up using a autoit script to change the required values (vid card output, resolution, and default auotlogin user) in the registry, and then trigger a restart. then added this to a custom button on the menu so you could change from PVR mode to desktop mode using the remote.

I did find a few utilitys which claimed to be able to reload the registry, but i didnt have much success with them.

the only other way i could think of doing it without the restart was to have an autoit script run through the actual process of button presses (right mouse button, down arrow 5 times, enter etc etc etc...) to change the resolution, and this wouldnt require the restart, but i never got around to trying it out. I imagine it would work though.

why not use the zoom feature in your vnc program? i use ultravnc viewer, and have it set to auto scale the window with a command line option in the shortcut. (-autoscaling)

VNC v3.7 (I think) allows you to scale the display. So, if the resolution on the remote pc is greater than that on the local pc, you can scale the display so that the entire screen fits on the lower res screen. It is under connection options. The newer free versions of do not include this option.

The problem with downscalling is that it makes it more difficult to read. Its wonderful doing it the other way round though! I'll give Ted's method a try when I have a moment as something like that would be the prefered solution.

You can use nircmd.exe to change screen resolution. It can use to turn off monitor of you are using plasma LCD, control volumn, dial-up network for EPG with custom buttons.
