Scrolling Text

So I have everything perfect except for one thing... On channels where the bottom portion of the screen has scolling text. That text is a little blurry, and it is jerkey and stutters sometimes. Examples of channels like this are: Fox News, CNN, NFL Network, ESPN etc.. All other channels look Great. The NFL Network is the worst one for me. The scrolling text at the bottom of it seems to get jerkey more then any of the other scrolling text channels. I have tried different deinterlacers, and the best one that I have found is the: "MPV Decoder Filter". It did as well or better then Nvidia Purevideo. I don't think that I'm having a problem with decoding, but I think there is something with the way the PVR-150 interprits the text. Even if I record a sample of NFL Network, the recording still has the jerkey text and blury text. Even when I burn it to DVD, or play it on another PC... I have tried Overlay, VMR7, VMR9, and VMR9 Custom, and all have the same symptoms only on channels that have scrolling text. My setup is this:

P4 2.4 Ghz
1 Gig Ram
250 GB Hard Drive
PVR-150 ( Non-MCE ) ( Latest drivers ) Version 2.7
ATI Radeon 9550 with 256 MB RAM ( Latest drivers )
Windows XP Home ( All updates etc... )

I'm connected to the PVR-150 using composite.


Any tips would be appreciated. I know this is minor issue, but my Tivo unit does not display the same behavior, so I'm trying to get to that level before I replace the Tivo with this. Should I consider another capture card other then the PVR-150??

I use non-mce pvr-150's and the scrolling text on the bottom is fine. I found it had more to do with which video decoder you use and what the settings are. I ended up using nvidia PureVideo but unlike you I have an nvidia card.

Pretty much the only thing you can do is play around with the combination video renderer and video decoder.

Alot of people that notice ticker problems end up using the nvidia decoders with overlay video renderer.

Have u tried the ATI video codecs? (I think it is CyberLink for ATI).
It gave me outstanding results:

I think it is a playback problem rather than a recording problem. I found that watching via an MVP produces an acceptable scrolling ticker and to get the same on the PC's involved a lot of experimenting with different drivers and codecs.

Purevideo decoder with appropriate settings and all is well - but I've got an nVidia card.

Just out of curiosity - what are "appropriate settings"? Could you post what you have for a starting point??

Since I watch news channels alot, I had this problem. It is a decoder issue and not your 150. When I tried the both the ATI Avivo & NVidia PureVideo Codecs, they reduced the stuttering but I still noticed it. It was a great improvement over the decoders that came with the Hauppauge card. It wasn't until I tried VMR7 that the stuttering completely went away.

The stuttering occurs on regular video too. If you look hard enough, you'll notice it. You just notice it more on scrolling text. None of the encoders 'interpret' text, because the scrolling text is part of the video frame.

Just out of curiosity - what are "appropriate settings"? Could you post what you have for a starting point??

I'm running a P4 3.06 northwood setup on Asus P4PE MB, a 6600GT AGP card, PVR500, on xp

It took some doing and it seems like there's some things I forgot. The most important thing is to make sure the system is *actually* using the purevideo decoders when you tell it to - I found for some reason, some settings would cause the system to default back to some other decoders, but only with GBPVR - when I played via WMP it always seemed to use the nVidia decoders.

FWIW, after making sure the purevideo decoders were actually being used and using the settings below (and possibly some I've forgotten) video playback and color quality improved tremendously, especially in sporting events and scrollers. Motion is fluid, colors are vivid, text is sharp (well, as sharp as one can expect from a non-hd setup)

Video Card:
6600GT
Driver ver: 6.14.10.9371
Resolution: 720x480 (this made a big difference in sharpness over 800x600)

Quartz.dll:

GBPVR Config:
VMR9 custom
nVidia purevideo video decoder

Nvidia Purevideo applet:
Display Type: Anamorphic/Raw Aspect -- (seems like this made a positive difference from the default setting - if I remember correctly)
Deinterlace control: Automatic
De-Interlace: Best Available -- (I thought I'd be smart and change this one to something static, playback quality suffered tremendously)
Enhanced nView Support: Prefer VMR9

I forgot to mention that I tried the Quartz dll fix referenced in one of the stickys or in this thread and it made things worse for me. A few people that have experienced that as well but it seems like it fixed more people then it didn't. I'm running version 6.05.2600.2749.
