Last I heard, it was not working due to Dish Network using different standards from DVB. Just want to know if there was a workaround or if there is already a fix.
Thanks,

I'll probably have time to look at it again some time soon if someone out there is able to recording me a 1 minute full transport stream of one of the dish transponders that carry the EPG? Any dish users out there got access to a webserver that could help out?

Sorry don't have a webserver, but anyone that does please tune into these channels 146, 239, 418, 424, 427, 436, or 438. These channels have the Extended EPG.

I can do this in a couple of weeks, they are adding a new dish, and I have a TwinHan102G on the way.

I am a happy long time Dish Network customer and relatively GBPVR user and I have been watching these threads with great interest.
Currently I am controlling my STB with HIP and an MCE IR Blaster and capturing with an ATI 550 card and everything is working nicely. However I am really interested in moving to a DVB-S PCI card and skipping that Digital to Analogue to Digital conversion. Can anyone point me to a good FAQ or Tutorial for setting up a DVB-S PCI card with DishNet and then perhaps with GBPVR? I am not interested in getting channels that I don't pay for and my goal would be to start using the DVB-S card and simply put the subbed STB in a closet and let it sit unused. What DVB-S cards work best, what Dish, LNBs work, what DishNet switches work, how do I use my CAM or otherwise authenticate to receive the channels I have paid for, etc. There seems to be so many pieces to this particular puzzle and opportunities to slip up. Any guidance or words of wisdom greatly appreciated. -Uisge

Uisge, I also tried asking same questions here but not enough info will be shared (I think b/c some people use it illegally), but I subscribed to this site:
http://dvbn.happysat.org/ It has a very active forum with lots of knowledgable people. BUT, I kinda put the idea aside for now, as from what I read, it is a lot of hassle: 1- You need to control the switches of the dish, which can be tough and need special hardware/software settings. Each type is different and depends on the switch kind ...etc. 2- You need special settings depending on type of dish you use (DishPro ...etc.) 3- You may need specail hardware to connect to smart card reader ...etc. 4- You will have scanning issues ...etc. and dish pointing issues ...etc. 5- Hacked plugins and softwares to make everything communicate correctly (proabbly 4 different pieces of software) 6- Lots of hassle to just make it work. I thought it is not worth it for now. Maybe later when I get more time, and I know that I will have free time during MONTHS to make it all work. This info is froma noob, and this is as much as I learned yesterday

I think that makes it sound a little more difficult than it really is.
There is a bit more of learning curve than you'd get with a analog card like a PVR150, but once you get your head around what DVB is, then its not too much extra work. It does come with some good advantages in terms of original MPEG2 bitstream from the broadcaster so no loss of quality, HD, AC3 sound, faster channel changing since you dont need to depend on set top boxes etc.

But it is SOO hard to get info. It is scattered all around the web, and u cannot know if this is the easist way or no to do it.
Can someone please PM me with some details of how to get me started on DVB for dishnetwork? Thanks a lot in advance.

Well I am not afraid of the tech or learning curve and I think I have my mind firmly wrapped around the technology. I am not necessarily concerned with going about it is easy way (but easy is nice) but had rather do this the Right Way.
Currently I still have a Dish 500 Legacy Switch/LNB but both receivers are DishPro receivers so if I need to upgrade to Dishpro LNB/Switches then I am willing to do that since it will give be a better future growth path. I really dont want to install a second dish or disrupt my current receivers ability to work properly. Beyond switches and LNB my big concern is the hardware. I have a Small Form Factor case so I need a low profile PCI card and bracket to use an internal card. It seems that most of the preferred cards (like the TwinHan 102G) are full height PCI cards and wont work for me and the the low profile cards out ther sem to not have low profile brackets available (but I guess I could fabricate one). My other option would be to use one of the external USB conencetd DVB-S receivers if those would work. I of course I am really not interested in buying hardware that is known NOT to work. The only other piece that is nagging me is the CAM stuff... As I said earlier, if anyone else has answers I would love to hear them. PM me if it is not something you are comfortable sharing in the forum. Reagrds, -Uisge |
