Purevideo in WMP = fine, GBPVR... not so fine

Hi,
I'm using the purevideo codecs to watch my mpeg2 recordings. When I run the recordings through wmp the video is a little dark but the video quality is really good. But when I try to watch videos though GBPVR I get a few different problems. When running VMR9 (and VMR9 Overlay) during any sort of panning or fast action a strong ghosting effect/ shuddering effect happens which makes it pretty unwatchable but the picture is high quality. With VMR7 the picture quality just doesnt look anything as good as it does in WMP. The wierd thing is that when watching videos in WMP the purevideo codec sys tray icon pops up and I can edit the settings but they dont actually change the way the video is displayed. In GBPVR they do change the way the video is being displayed. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get gbpvr video looking as clean as wmp? In GBPVR all I have installed for codec options is purevideo because I completely wiped my HD clean to start over from scratch.

It'll most likely come down to the combinations of video decoder and video render you're using. GB-PVR doesnt do any of the playback itself. It just hands that job over to Directshow, which is the same components WMP uses for playing these files.

WMP is most likely use Overlay, so renderer is the first setting I'd change.

VMR puts a big hit on the PC too, and yours is pretty marginal CPU wise and has only limited RAM. Try Overlay mode only.

Also, WMP defaults to Overlay mode. Try switching it to VMR mode and see if you don't have the same problems there. If you're using WMP 11, you'll find the setting under the menu Tools->Performance->Advanced. Under the Video Acceleration settings, change Use Video Mixing Renderer from Use Overlays to Use High Quality Mode. My guess is you'll see a big hit in WMP then too.

No, not necessarily.

Did you look into the quartz.dll thing I mentioned above?

I tried the quartz.dll replacement before I reformatted my drive and it seemed to mess everything up even more. I'll give it another try when I get off of work. Thanks.

Its a protected file, so you need to boot in safe mode to replace, otherwise Windows will try and restore from a copy.

As always, you should take a back up of the original file beforehand in case of unexpected problems.
