I was wondering how hard it would be to separate out the "capture part" of GPBVR to create a "network capture" PC that simply takes in "tune this channel and strem to this PC" information.

Would allow multiple customized GBPVR's to use the same "network based" capture device.

I would envision it working a little bit like the HDHomerun device does, where a low end PC simply does the capture and streaming and a one (or more) higher end PC's handle the display, database, and scheduling functions.

Thanks for the great product, GBPVR is by far the easiest and most full featured PVR out there.

Someone could already write a plugin to do this if they wanted to.

Yup. That's basically what we did for the HDHomeRun before the BDA drivers came out.

Whurlston, Do you have a link to the source for that?

Thanks.

I started with external recorder plugin (see wiki). And added the code to tune the HDHomeRun to stream to VLC originally. I then evolved it to the point that it was using a network stream source filter (like Elecard NW-Plus or MS DSNet filters). Unfortunately, I lost my source for the plugin when I had a hard drive failure but I can remember the concepts if not the actual code.

To be honest though, I'm having difficulty understanding why you are going to the trouble. If you set up GB-PVR in a sever/client mode, the client would do all the decoding and displaying of video, which is where the majority of the processing power goes. The database and scheduling takes minimal processing power, and you can technically set the shares for the file locations to the "client" machine if it has that faster/larger drives, in effect doing what you are proposing.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding.

I want to be able to customize the gui for specific users. Mainly I want to select specific channels to include in the gui for different users. I have muliple laptops and I would like to have a "kids gbpvr" a "wife gbpvr" and a "dad gbpvr", but I would like to potentially use a single backend "recording" PC. Does that make sense?

Yup, now it does. I would have to think about the best way to implement this though. Even with the changes to the external recorder plugin, the backend would still have to "listen" for the commands to know what source/channel to change. It may be easier to write a "User favorites" type plugin that would only display the desired stuff on the client than to do what you are suggesting.

While I'm typing this, I remember that sub implemented something along these lines already. Have you tried the "Easy View" feature?

I have not, do you have a link to what it is or how to configure it?

I did a quick search of the wiki and I did not find anything.
