Hello,

So I recently changed ISP's - but get to keep my old email (which is good, as it's used for a lot of important sutff)

I can connect and download emails, but when I try to send, I get an error that I am not sending a correct FQDN or IPv6 literal.

It seems that outlook 2003 doesn't send anything as the FQDN.
(I am guessing here, as the error says: "must contain a FQDN or IPv6 literal in []."

When I try thunderbird, it says "invalid HELO/EHLO of [192.168.1.3]" which is the internal IP address of this PC.

Can anyone tell me how to make either Thunderbird / Outlook 2003 send a valid FQDN?

If I telnet into the mail server, and do a HELO command of "www.google.co.nz" it authenticates! - I dont mind using my actual IP address etc, I just want to be able to send emails through my client again.

Any ideas?
Thanks

I think that when you were connected directly to the ISP, they didn't need to authenticate you, and now that you are connecting elsewhere, you need to add "requires authenticate" to the SMTP parameters.
* Rogers Analog Cable [Canada]
* Hauppauge WintTV PVR USB2
* IBM Thinkpad T42 / 1GB Mem / Centrino 1.6Ghz / 60GB HD / ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 + VGA/DVI out
* MCE Remote + Keyboard
* Win XP SP2 / GBPVR [Latest version. always]
* Pioneer HDTV via VGA (1360x768)
* MS Remote Keyboard
* Logitech Harmony 880 [via MS Remote Control Reciever]

Yeah, but it's not looking for a password - just a url it can authenticate as existing (as I say, I sed google, and it worked)

I'll try playing with any more settings in Outlook and see what comes up.

Thanks

My 2 cts: Isn't it so that you have to use the pop3-server from the new account but still have to use the smtp-server from your old account.

I'd say that was the wrong way round - pop3 server from your old account, but SMTP server for the new account.

Better yet, get yourself your own domain with mail forwarding and slowly migrate your contacts to that address, then it doesn't matter who your ISP is.

Yes - I'd go with that.

POP3 downloads require a username/password but don't care where you're downloading from. SMTP servers, on the other hand, are set to prevent 3rd-party relaying to prevent spammers using them as 'jumping points'.

I used to use a dial-up to the company I worked for to get internet connection and my wife used to dial-up to Freeserve. When I moved to a Demon broadband connection, she was able to download emails but the Freeserve SMTP server wouldn't let her send as she was connecting via a Demon circuit.

If your old ISP has a 'webmail' facility you could always use that or do as Martin suggested and migrate over to a new setup. I gave my wife a mailbox on my Demon account in the end - it took about a month for her contacts to switch over.

Cheers,
Brian

No I did mean it the way I said. You have to use the smtp-server from your ISP and the pop-server from the new account (where your new mails come in). This is how I meant it, I'm not sure it'll work, it did for a friend of mine (afaik).

gmail also has an SMTP server, and you can access it from anywhere, but it requires a login, and a little more work to get set up.

just a thought, then it wont matter who your ISP is.

He's exactly right on that. I'd be willing to bet that's what your problem is.
