You definitely have something like vobsub that generating subtitles as well though, which will need to be disabled or you'll see two sets. There is the slightly possibility it plays some part in this corruption you're seeing (since vobsub processes each frame of video to write its subtitles onto the video itself).
Since I've never tried to use vobsub, where might I enable/disable it?
Edit, I conffirm I have it, but I have never played with it...
