I will be setting up a new HTPC and I would like it to be able to a) stream to other computers on my network and b) stream over the internet.

a) I was thinking that I could just network the pcs. Other than that, how can I get a nice GUI to navigate around my shows. Also, will my network pcs be able to read recoreded shows or will they need to be transcoded first?

b) I know orb does this, is there a slicker way to do it?

Again, I emphasize free. I do have a laptop sitting around that I could turn into a server

So I did have some successful searches and found that GBPVR has web streaming which seems really cool.

How successful have people been with orb over LAN?

I really didn't get it to work properly through firewalls (at work) so I opted for Orb - it streams on port 80 so it will get through most firewalls, and the streaming seems to be better.

I too have tried GBPVR streaming using extended web admin and have been unsuccessful getting through to my GBPVR server PC. Probably something I'm doing wrong

I've used and still do use Orb and it worked well out of the box.

I wish web admin installed (read worked) so easily cause I'd rather stay within GBPVR.

So the webadmin didn't work out of the box?

I just set up GBPVR, then enabled the webadmin. Installed VLC and I was able to stream. I had to change the streaming port to 8000 as my firewall at work wouldn't allow much else.

Apart from that, enable to port forwarding in your router, and configure whatever firewall you run, and should be away laughing.

What is the issue when you try and access the webadmin? Also, are you trying from a workplace, or within your own lan (or someone elses house?)

Thanks
