Hi, this my first post on the boards although I have been a long time lurker and fan of GBPVR.

I recently started building my first HTPC after getting hold of an old OEM pc.

The specs are:
P4 2.4Ghz
512mb generic ram
MSI 648 motherboard (closest match as the actual board is an unbranded OEM version)
GeForce4 420 MX
ancient Seagate 20GB hard drive
Hauppauge Nova T 500
XP Pro SP2

After installing the Nova card into the PCI slot I tried installing the drivers from the cd but windows could not install the drivers although it reconized the hardware.

After calling Hauppuage tech support I was directed to the newest version of the drivers which I downloaded and tried but got the same error.Sad

After a second 20 min call to hauppauge I was told that I had a faulty card so took it back to PC World where they tested it and confirmed it as working!

I think the problem lies with the XP because the hardware and drivers are correct but it won't install.

Does anyone know what files are needed by XP to support installing TV cards?

Any help is greatly appreciated, Cheers,
Wciow.

Hi,

You should not need anything other than the supplied disk to install under XP SP2, I did the same install at the weekend while doing a bit of an upgrade.

For drivers, ensure you don't confuse the WinTV PVR 500 with the Nova-T 500 as these are two very different cards. Fell into that trap myself.

Have a look here:

http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/pages/support...vista.html

The instructions reference vista and XP but these are the drivers I use under XP SP2 with a PCI Nova-T 500 and a Nova-T USB ver3.

You don't need to install any of the WinTV software unless you want to for testing, only the basic card drivers are required.

If you still have issues, please post the exact error message you get, or point at which the installation fails.

regards

It took me a long time to get this card working. It turned out that you need a particular XP patch for it to work - sorry I don't have the details with me, but it wasn't included in my XP SP2 CD. I'll post again later when I find the reference (I found the details on the Hauppauge forum - http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/pages/forum.html - although I coudn't find it just now!).

I also did a few fairly random Windows updates, which required me spending more time connecting the PC to the internet - which I wanted to avoid.

Needless to say, as soon as it started working, I took a disc image!

Follow-up to my previous post:

It was Microsoft's KB896626 hotfix that I had to install, which according to Hauppauge "resolves a number of problems with BDA support in XP SP2. Recommended that you install for Nova/HVR cards in XP SP2 but do not install in MCE 2005". But, as I said before, the other ad-hoc updates I performed may also have helped - I'm not really sure.

I'd also suggest removing all references to Nova T 500 tuners in your BDA.ini file and then add the lines that sub suggested in this post: http://forums.gbpvr.com/showpost.php?p=1...ostcount=8. Using these entries was a definite improvement over the default ones.

Good luck - it is worth the effort when it's all working.

this hotfix is included in the 3.4 driver & app bundle from Hauppague.

btw: I just tried 3.4a1 bundle and ir.exe does not work for me with my nova-t 500 so I rolled back to version 3.3
