What are the quality settings that everyone is using for their recordings, what is the end purpose of the records (i.e. burn to DVD or just watch on TV), and how many hours do people normally get per gigabyte?

I'm currently recording movies using the medium setting, but I can only record about 40 hours on a 100 GB hard drive. I am ultimately burning all of these movies on DVD. Any recommendations on what quality settings will still produce a good quality DVD and save hard drive space? I'd be open to some suggestions for custom settings as well.

Thanks.

Depends on how much you want to fit on a DVD - and what the source material is.

I finds that CBR, 3500 will work OK for most things if you are looking to save space, and this (I think) works out ot be 1,75 GB per hour - 3 hours per DVD.

When recording football to put on DVD, I use a much higher bitrate, due to the fast action etc. (about 5500 seems good for a football match (2 hours) to fit onto a single layer DVD-R - I probably could bump iot up a little after removing ads)

3500-4000 should be OK for general TV watching. Just try recording the same type of show at differemt bit rates and see how your card handles it. (these are all at Full D1 resolution - I don't like to reduce res, as I dont think you can mix 2 resolutions in the same VTS set in a DVD)

Here is the "low" setting I use to record stand-up comedy. For this, the quality doesn't really matter. Burning to DVD, this will give basically VHS quality. I get around 1.4 GB for a 1 hr show.
AMD Athlon64 2800+
1GB DDR and 2x 160GB SATA HDD
ATI Radeon X1650Pro AGP 8x 512MB DDR
1x OnAir HD, 2x HVR1600, 1x PVR-150
Cox Analog Cable and OTA ATSC
Windows XP SP3
GBPVR (>= 1.3.7)

Where do you find those recording settings? I've looked all through Config and the settings within gb-pvr, but haven't found them.

In your capture source settings, click the the settings button to view the 'direct recording source' settings, then select a profile at the bottom the screen and it 'edit'.

BDA devices dont get this option, since no encoding is done with this type of device.

bckappen,

try 640x480 instead of 352x480 screen, it does not take much more space but better picture both for viewing with VLC and MVP.

Thanks.

I change the default medium to 4000. That makes a 1 hour recording just about 2 gig. This makes it real easy to guestimate how much free time you have on your drive, 15.5 gig= almost 8 hours. Plus I make DVDs of many shows I record and watch from the DVD. I do menus and cut commercials and do chapter breaks at each commercial.
With bitrate at 4000, you can fit 3 episodes per disk after cutting commercials. I have never noticed any compression artifacts other than the crap on some Comcast digital channels that is part of the broadcast.
3x MVPs (not used anymore)
XBMC
Hauppauge 150 via SVideo
Comcast Digital Cable
Motorola HD Cable box channel changed via Firewire
Vista Home Premium with RDP hack
AMD Athalon 64 5000+
340gig sata, plus 80SATA+3x160IDE Drives in XP machine for storage.
