As for remote access - RDP like mentioned is not a good choice for this.
I have used VNC in the past, but as I'm sometimes remoting to it from work, i switched to LogMeIn (the basic free version). It allows access from remote, w/o having to deal with port opening and forwarding, does scale of screen and have better performance than VNC (I don't like the mouse in VNC and the fact that none of the special keys are transmitted from the keyboard).
