For a brand new setup for a friend, could I get some NZ oriented advice re GBPVR compatible tuner cards? I only have experience with anologue PVR150's but we have Freeview digital satellite, now, and terrestrial provision in March next year. The site in question has a SKY dish so after the horiz polarity switchover that could be used for the feed if required.

Grateful for advice and perspectives.

hvr3000 has both terrestial and sat (and analog but i think its software encoding so no good gbpvr but im not 100%)that will be the next card i get
at the moment i have avermedia a700 seems ok picture is great as you would expect but the reception of satellite has to be real strong im using an old sky dish just set up on the ground not the best get a few glishes but its ok
i also have pvr150/&pvr500 the picture from satellite is so much sharper
when you have digital problems they are harder to pin point i have found
the aspect ratio between stations is a pain in the ass aswell but they will sort that by the end of the year i would say as they buy in new programs(mainly tv3/c4)

Thanks for the reply. Checking here http://ascent.co.nz/productspecification...mID=349152
it looks like the hvr1300 is terrestrial, only, and the analogue is hardware encoded. So it doesn't look like a goer till next year for digital reception?

Ah, silly me. Yes, the hvr3000 looks the ticket. Good flexibility with both sat and terrestrial covered.

Does the "analogue cable TV" work with our Telstra cable TV do you know??

yeah and the price isnt to bad im waiting on pci express cards to come out with twin tunners
the problem with new boards they only have 3 standard pci slots
find a board with more then its not such a biggy which way you go
i got caught building the computer for the lounge
they said the pci epress cards would be coming soon and that was over a year ago real piss off i say build it for now!! cause by the time the new cards come out your computer will be to slow for what ever they are anyway
i would use 5 pci slots if had them but i only have 3so it restricts what i want to do with the machine just a thought since you said you were building a new pc

i have no idea on the analog cable i think its pay tv anyway
sub may know hes from wellington and thats where the cable tv is i think

Yes, I would certainly like to see a dual tuner card, too. As you say, you have to be careful re the PCI slots. We were looking at a Dell 520 - looked good value with 22" screen and 2GB RAM but there are only two PCI slots (I also don't like machines with hidden restore partitions, either).

So, we'll either build one from scratch or go with a local system builder.

Thanks for help.

Lindsay.

Unfortunately the analog side of this device lacks the required hardware MPEG2 encoder, so isnt really of much use in GB-PVR, but its still good for DVB-T and DVB-S.

make sure he has at least 2 phyical hard drives aswell you wont get that with a package deal
