Using VLC Decoder

is there a way to use VLC as my decoder?
I have tried PureVideo, Cyberlink, and many others in various combinations and I can't get a good picture without stuttering, but VLC runs everthing perfect the picture is great and it is easy on my cpu.
I am not sure how VLC works, or how it does it, so I don't know if it is possible.

What do you exactly mean by "decoder"? Do you want to use VLC to play back in the background instead of GBPVR/PVRX2 (front-end)?

GBPVR/PVRX2 work in the same way as any player based on Microsoft Windows DirectShow, meaning that it must have different filter to do the job in the back ground to fetch file, split into audio, video and maybe subtitle (there can be more info in one container like MP4, but AVI =Audio-video-interleave, is the most used container for GBPVR/PVRX2). From the splitter you will have at least one audio stream that must be decompressed (decoded) and one video (only pictures) stream that will be feed into a renderer, which connect to hardware driver like sound card or video card.

VLC can not work as a DirectShow based filter in the background as it use its own integrated filter to do this work. It will not fit into the filter graph as it is not a filter, but a player. That is why VLC seem more stable and work better as doesn't need to work with Windows based external (from VLC point of view) filter, only what renderer that connect to hardware.

If you mean the way VLC are used for streaming, then you can use it by enable in config.exe those setting to Web Scheduling (must have an open port and log in set in config). Open the same port for your firewall.

You don't need to use EnhancedWebSchedule, but that wiki's info is useful for how to set VLC to work even with basic configuration of web schedule. (Look for section about VLC.)

In your web browser you use http://192.234.234.255:port/gbpvr/login.aspx *IP number is only an example here*

Where 192.234.234.255 are you local computers IP (open a command windows and use IPCONFIG /ALL to find your computers IP). After the semicolon ":" you must add a port which must be open from firewall. If you forget to open it, you will get failure message to connect from your browser.

When you use your browser to control GBPVR/PVRX2, you can then use VLC to stream what it is recording (instead of timeshift) and in many way replace the user interface that are meant for TV display with your browser+VLC as player.

You should give more info about your hardware as stuttering can be depending on weak or incorrect setting in hardware driver or on how you use different filter. We need also know what kind of format your video files are that you want to play and how you output this to speaker and display.

GSpot and MediaInfo are two good tool to find out about how your media files have been encoded and what codec that would work best. (Google for those tools.)

What are your system specs? What % of the CPU is used during playback?

As the guys point out above, VLC is not a directshow decoder so cant be used outside of VLC.

My fuzzy logic was, VLC uses a large number of free decoding and encoding libraries. Many of its codecs are provided by the libavcodec codec library from the FFmpeg project, since it is possible to DL all of these files and programs from this project, if it is possible to setup GB-PVR front end to use the same codec settings and libraries that the VLC is using, therefore making it as picture perfect as VLC is.

I am at workright now,so I will not be able to try the 2 tools yet, but I will when I get home.
My hardware is as follows.
I have 2 setups all the same except motherboard and ram manufacturer, Both use the HDHomerun.
1st
AMD X2 64 @ 4200mhz
4 gigs corsair mem
Abit NF-M2 Nview Motherboard with intergrated Nvida GeForce 6150 (256mb ram)
19" widescreen lcd connected thru DVI @1440x900.

2nd
AMD X2 64 @ 4200mhz
4 gigs G-Skill mem
BIOSTAR TForce TF7050-M2 motherboard with intergrated NVIDIA GeForce 7050PV HDMI (256mb ram)
This is hooked up to a 42" Vizio lcd tv thru HDMI @ 720p

Vista Ultimate x64
Nvidia PureVideo
Cyberlink DVD
VLC
GB-PVR (newest ver)
Kaspersky ( off during testing)
Widows Firewall (all needed programs allowed, and also turned off for testing)
CPU usage is not high at all, overlay seems to be the highest, not sure exactly but if you need to know I can run it and find out.
I have tried all of the Video settings availible to me on GB-PVR,like Nvidia, cybermedia, overlay, ect,
some give better results then others, but none are stutter free.
I have also tried WinUltimate 32bit version with much better results but,I had a decent picture with very high cpu usage in the overlay setting, and the rest would stutter or not work at all
so I hope this is what you need.. if not let me know and I will get what you do need..

Sorry, its not that simple. The ffmpeg libraries are not directshow decoders. The closest you get is the ffdshow decoders which are based on these libraries, making the functionality available to directshow apps, but to be honest ffdshow isnt that great and causes problems for lots of users.

There are plenty of other threads where users have worked through their issues with getting smooth playback with directshow.
