Disappointing MPEG2 decoding

Good thing this is a sticky note, just helped me fix the same issue on my box. I backgraded quartz.dll to 9b using "replace.exe", and it cleared up my jitter issue. Which I was surprised I had an issue with the system I have, AMD 4400 X2, with 1Gig Ram, 512Meg X1800 ATI card. Thanks all!!

I tried the older quartz.dll to see if it helped with my playback. I was getting periodic pauses in the video, probably a different problem than what others are seeing. That did not help I went back to the dx9c version. I experimented with different video decoders but ended up going back to the hauppauge supplied decoders. In the end it came down to optimizing my OS, turning off services I didn't need eliminating some utilities from starting up, checking the event logs and tracking down and solving any of those issues. I am doing a lot with this system its not just a pvr box. Anyways those tweeks made a significant difference. If anyone wants to check their running services and needs a guide to go by here is an excellent site for that info.

Having started this thread almost 2 years ago now it still amazes me that this still has not been fixed by Microsoft. Funny thing is, I thought it had...

Somewhere in all these posts was my finding that after an accidental patch my system was working fine after a 9c update. I thought the problem was solved - case closed. Others kept running into it, but my problems seemed to be fixed.

A year or so later I upgrade my machine (new MB, CPU, video card ) and I'm having trouble running in VMR mode with HD video. I figure its all kinds of other things - don't even consider trying this again - and after almost a year of finding it impossible to get decent HD playback with VMR (it's great in Overlay), I finally try this again tonight. Stutter gone! You'd think I'd learn.

I've stuck with Overlay since it uses so much less CPU than VMR9 with HD content, but VMR is a viable option now. With 9c, it wasn't viable at all.

I have found a lot of utilities that come with Video card and motherboards are useless with a PVR system, I have a NVIDIA4 chips set and the only way I could get everything stable I removed all the utilities/drivers, then rebooted and closed all the found new hard tabs when it came back up. Once the boot up finished I manually load just the hard ware drivers (only) without any of the MFG utilities. Rebooted one more time then installed the ffshow pack with all the codec for video and audio. Now every thing works great on my Server and all my clients with out any issues. No other decoders require to be loaded, I like to keep it simple with a one package load for video and audio. Just my 2 cents worth as what I have found with hardware software being loaded on my GBPVR.

*Since GB-PVR has seperate options for Video and Audio decoders, the cheapest version of PureVideo (which doesn't support surround sound) can be used for video and still get surround sound with a different audio decoder, correct?

*Lastly, for those who have bought it, how does Nvidia deal with updates on it? There doesn't seem to be any major version specified like 1.0, 2.0, etc, so does buying mean updates for life? Or would I eventually have to buy it again for a newer version?

Recently, my trial ran out. I did not buy it... It was OK, and my first reaction it was better than any other decoder I had tried. But when it expired and I installed a different one, the quality was the same, so I didn't bother buying it.

I also noticed that the PureVideo decoder used more CPU than say, the CyberLink.

After reading 17 pages of this stuff, no one has been able to answer this simple question.

Why does video playback using the older GBPVR executable have far better video quality than the PVRX2 executable? Both files are running on the exact same configuration files, meaning that the same codecs, bitrates, and other settings are being used by both programs?

If you were using the same video renderer (ie, VMR9 Custom) and same decoders and source files, then you do get exactly the same quality in both. Infact, the exact same code is used to do playback in both (NativeUtilities.dll).

If you think its different, then you're most likely using a different video renderer. Remember PVRX2.exe is always using VMR9 Custom, or VMR9 Fullscreen Exclusive if you started it with the -fse command line parameter. The video renderer options on the playback tab are only used by GBPVR.exe.

Here is what happens. If I set it to VMR9 custom, it looks just as dirty in both programs. If I switch it to VMR9 Fullscreen, GBPVR looks great. In PVRX2, the quality continues to be horrible.
